After all, the underlying labels of "left" and "right" are derived from where people sat on a French tennis court in 1791.
I have always wondered about the origins of left and right. I would appreciate more on the history of the various labels used to describe political leanings.

Thanks for the article.

John, I always find your commentary lucid and insightful... this?

That fight was not localized to Tennessee. Via the Internet, maybe a million Americans followed the Tennessee income tax fight minute by minute (me included). All who were aware of the Tennessee fight learned a lesson that will apply in other fights, on other issues, in other states and nationally. This brace of lightning-fast horses --- talk radio and the Internet --- are hauling a battle wagon of angry Americans who will cause political consequences of increasing magnitude.

-is something I have noted and mentioned before. A year ago, callers to local talk radio were getting most of their stories and information from the local papers, or from other talk shows. But more and more, they seem to be getting them off the 'net, and the incease in the speed with which stories, talking points, and information get confirmed or debunked is almost staggering.

It's a lovely thing to behold!

Whatchoodoin up in Highlands, son? That's wine/quiche/Mercedes country up there. You should come down offen that that mountain to Rosman where us real folks live - where our idea of fun is to get likkered up and shoot us some wild pigs offen the back deck.

Seriously, when it comes to the electromagnetic spectrum, talk radio is the only band of intelligence in an otherwise vast sea of noise.

I have heard about another (possible) origin for the terms "left" and "right." Joseph Stalin was looking for a way to differentiate his version of socialism from that of the Nazis. So the Communists became "left" (or "left-wing" and the Nazis became "right" (or "right-wing"). I don't remember whether the one-word or two-word terms were used.

I'd be happy to trade them a couple of talk radio shows in exchange for the lock they have on the major broadcast networks and big city newspapers. Sheesh! They want EVERYTHING!
