I'm not sure how closely you've followed the efforts in Arizona. The Barnett (Bennet?) brothers own a 22,000 acre farm on the border. They have spent $30,000 of their own money to install sensors on their property. In the last two years they have arrested 8,000 illegal immigrants on their property. They carry weapons and have sparked no incidents of violence. They turn the illegals over to the INS, who deport them.

They appeared on the Donahue program a few weeks back. They state that they see the same people over and over.

They were experiencing a high incidence of tresspassing, vandalism, burglery and basic petty criminal activity on their farm.

They estimate that about 200 people per day enter our nation over their property. If they are accurate, that's around 73,000 people per year on their property alone.

While I am sympathetic to your mention of ineptitude at the INS, I think it's very important that we recognize that our government provides too few resources and basicly ties the INS' hands even to the point of allowing them to come under fire without providing attitional aide or putting an end to illegal immigration once and for all. I'm plenty willing to damn the INS where they have made mistakes, but some of their workers are as disturbed by this situation as the rest of us are, and are very frustrated themselves.

I believe there's a Harry Truman aspect to this that supercedes the INS shortcomings. Until the top gives a hoot about this, the INS will be incapable of resolving the issue. The "buck" is sitting on George Bush's desk.

Grin. Hey, he really cares about this topic. Don't get the idea that just because he goes for the troat of anyone who proposes any remedy to the situation, that he doesn't care as much as they do. LOL Just ask him. He'll tell you.

BTTT!

I used to be an open borders type, but now I say: Shut 'em down!

Good for these guys. Too bad this won't get reported at all. Rove is going to caution Bush to ignore it. The whole immigration process needs ot be overhauled.

I can think of only one productive movement that he would be involved in and I wish he'd use the conventional facilities and not the forum to do it.

I will spread the my ineptitude statement around. Everybody is guilty... INS, Justice, Executive, states.

Malkin gives an example in her book where INS, sheriffs, police, etc will round up illegals overstaying their visas and then have INS/judges release them on a promise to appear at a deportation hearing. They then disappear again into the population.

That is ridiculous. Either hold them for the hearings or deport immediately. Why do they need a hearing if their visa has expired?

I'm only 2 chapters into her book and I roll my eyes every time I turn a page. The book needs to be sent to every representative at state and federal level (although I am willing to bet it would never get read.)

You're right. Bush needs to make a policy decision on halting illegal immigration. I won't hold my breath though since he is leaning more toward amnesty than closing the borders.

Public school officials, healthcare employees and the police are forbidden to turn in illegals to the INS in most areas of the United States, unless that person is involved in a crime. Then the police "may" notify the INS.

The INS is the agency that recommends illegals be freed until the hearings come about. Why? Because they are instructed to do so.

What we have going on is open borders without calling it open borders. We have people who are very sympathetic to open borders who refuse to order enforcement of our laws.

I have heard from two different people in the last few weeks, that the INS has been ordered not to apprehend, detain or deport illegals. Only one person can do that.

I keep meaning to buy her book, but right now I'm afraid to read it as it hits too close to home.

Things have gotten just a bit weird here in Cochise County in the past few weeks. First, the Border Patrol quietly closed and dismantled the checkpoints on the highways leading to I-10. That gives any illegals or smugglers an unimpeded shot at hitting I-10 and all points east and west.

Border Patrol vehicles also suddenly became invisible. I'm used to seeing them constantly while driving, but now I *might* see one per day.

Meanwhile, I hear the Barnett brothers are catching twice the number of illegals they were getting last year.

Wow, I hope the Barnett brothers are watching their backside. Thwarting half that many 'customers' would be enough to get the attention of the alien smuggling syndicate, I would think.

Still, we're gonna have to win hearts & minds of the folks in the interior if the situation is to ever improve. Thats why its so demoralizing to see people on this forum spouting the same ol' crap about 'jobs Americans won't do', etc. We should ALL know better by now.

Huzzah! I love it! God Bless these freedom lovers. Hope this sets a trend for others to follow. I have so much admiration for Americans that are not afraid to do what is right, not only in their hearts, but minds and souls as well.

Yes, you are right. The attitudes of people removed from this problem have been a continual source of sorrow to me. If they don't see the devistation in their neighborhood, they could care less.

The FBI has notifed these brothers that there is Mexican Mafia hit out on them.

Part of the problem that most people do not understand, is that since there is so much money to be made in the coyote business, the drug runners have taken over the business. When they run into opposition, they get angry.

Don't get me wrong. I like President Bush and I think he is doing a good job in most areas, especially considering the degradation and chaos he got handed from the prior "administration", and I am even willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that there are things he is on top of that he isn't letting on, but even given that, unless he becomes a real hard @ss on border control and getting and keeping mideastern non-citizens out of this country, and keeping Islam under close scrutiny and tight rein here, it is very hard to take the war on terrorism real seriously.

That's my take too. How can you leave your borders wide open and claim you're doing everything you can? Thanks.

I can confirm this observation. They've pulled up the checkpoints in Sonoita, Whetstone, Tombstone, and Elfrida. As far as I can tell - every checkpoint in Cochise County has been dismantled.

Border Patrol vehicles also suddenly became invisible. I'm used to seeing them constantly while driving, but now I *might* see one per day.

I can also confirm this observation. I used to see Border Patrol vehicles everywhere, usually with a car or van pulled over and illegals sitting on the ground waiting to be hauled away. I passed one or two daily on my way home from work. Now, they're nowhere to be found. I did see, last Wednesday evening, large number of BP vehicles parked in a parking lot on Ft. Huachuca.

Meanwhile, I hear the Barnett brothers are catching twice the number of illegals they were getting last year.

Roger Barnett himself has made this very statement. This last month they captured twice what they captured during the same month last year.
