Looking For a Nice Safe Community with a Fairly Conservative College
12.07.02 | mlmr

I am looking for a safe, conservative community for my family. I live in the middle of liberal La-la land and homeschool my children. There are some changes in our lives and I now have to work and the children need to be in schools. They are not going to be quite as supervised or protected as before and I need to provide a safe community for them. I have a gifted and talented daughter who could take college courses. I have three younger children who I need to place in good public or Christian schools. Safety and conservative culture are two major factors here. Any input from Freepers would be gratefully received.

We moved last summer from San Mateo to Auburn Alabama where our son now says he is having the best college experience of all of his friends who stayed in Northern California. His friends are missing out on teachers who don't have a bias, or if they do its conservative. Auburn has great traditions, costs about the same as a UC college for non-residents and about half for residents, Our son has made many new friends, also none of his friends in California have football, and his friend who went to Berkeley now does not believe in the competition and violence of football.

Auburn.edu is the website, one page application. If you are interested in next year it may be too late at this time to qualify for dorm housing but many students live in apartments.

BTW, Auburn and Opelika are great mid size towns and if you were thinking of relocating housing is in the 80 to 150K range. 210k will get a several acre home on a lake so look into it.

This is an interesting thread, a great deal of information that should be helpful in your search.

I would recommend consideriing Danville, Kentucky. Their web site is: http://www.danville-ky.com/ and is loaded with information.

A town of about 15,000 with a strong, conservative liberal-arts school (Centre College) plus other educational services that may meet your needs.

I lived there for four years and my oldest daughter graduated from Danville High School. I now live in Lexington, about 30 miles north of Danville.

Should you be interested in Danville after visiting their web site and have more questions feel free to FReepmail me.

Springfield, Missouri. A very low crime city with several good colleges in the city. My alma mater was Evangel University (was Evangel College when I went, and is a very conservative college. Southwest Missouri State is also in town and is a typical State College, but doesn't have the party atmosphere that most nationally known colleges do. We have an outstanding community college as well, Ozarks Technical College.

The only real problem is the idiocy of the drivers (those who haven't driven here just do not understand how bad it can be!) and most of those are locals not college kids.

Springfield is essentially a small town with the population of 100,000.

How about Lynchburg, VA and Liberty University. Lynchburg is about 60% white, 30% Black, so the interracial stuff probably wouldnt be much of a problem. Lynchburg is a great town near the mountains, but I dont know anything about the crime stats. Liberty U might be too conservative for you though.

Look at Omaha, Nebraska. Lots of West Coasters moved out there because of the conservative environment, decent culture, affordable housing etc...highly conservative, Catholic and Protestant secondary schools etc. My brother lives out there.

Omaha/Lincoln area is great. I hope I can make it back to Lincoln to live once I finish school - that's how much I liked it.

Where in Maine? I just moved to Maine.

Mlmr, here's my advice so far. Don't look at BYU or Ricks (which is now BYU Idaho, BTW) unless you're LDS. I just moved from Pleasant Grove, UT and while I made some good friends there, not being LDS made life lonely and difficult. For someone 13, it would make it doubly so.

The second thing I want to add is that I went to college when I was 14 and had my mind infiltrated with leftist propaganda, so I know *exactly* what you are talking about.

You are very wise to take the risk of that happening seriously. I'd recommend her not attending an on school college campus, if possible. I don't have a specific school or town recommendation for you, but if you or your daughter would like to talk to me further, I'd be willing to share some more details about my past experiences.

I'll keep you in my prayers,
Suzan

From my experiences, and I've lived many places in the US--if you don't care about climate, consider Texas. I don't live there now, but I'll always be something of a Texan. Abilene was mentioned, a good idea. Also Lubbock and Amarillo--all have colleges of quality that are not too crazy. But you have to realize that asking for a conservative college really puts a squeeze on your options! Bob Jones University is in Greenville, SC, but Greenville is growing by leaps and bounds.

I also loved my sojourn on the Eastern Shore of Maryland (also Delaware and Virginia, called Delmarva). A Republican part of Maryland, with some local colleges influenced by the farmer history of the area.

If you don't mind Seventh-day Adventists, I think someone has already mentioned Southern Adventist University at Collegedale [Chattanooga Eastside], Tennessee. Very rainy mild climate, makes especial efforts to serve homeschoolers and has many in attendance. Very international student body, many Hispanics, Asians, Africans etc. Black Americans about 8%; White Americans about 75%. Lots of jobs and fast building up though, no longer in the sticks.

There is also a new college just opened in Loudoun COunty Virginia just for homeschoolers, what is it called, Patrick Henry College? This has nothing to do with any religion. It is all white though. This is near DC, some 40 miles west of DC, but there is a big Saudi Arabian Muslim school and mosque in that county as well.

Many have mentioned Hillsdale, which is NOT in southwestern Michigan, but in south central Michigan near the corner of Indiana and Ohio.

Many have mentioned Grove City, PA, which is in NW Pa not too far south of Erie, Pa. In that area also consider "Indiana University of Pennsylvania," if you don't mind having two states on your diploma. California University of Pa also exists. Those are both middle-sized public universities.

What you do NOT tell us, is where you live now, and what climate you prefer. Big cities off limits? How cold or warm do you want to be?

Or, are there any special programs that the college needs to offer, nursing, premed, prelaw, etc? Engineering?

Is Florida off limits, or near the top of your wishes? What is the coldest winter you are prepared to tolerate? The hottest summer?

Is South Dakota off limits, too cold? Lots of colleges there, no nonsense.

Any special religion you want supported, or any religion you DON'T like and DON'T want supported?

I also think Brigham Young U, the big Mormon school, has a campus in Hawaii, and also one in Jerusalem, Israel!!!

Besides the main campus at Provo, UTAH.

Are you staying in California? Pepperdine is a good conservative college and if you located in Simi Valley, you'd have a nice environment and good schools. Might be a bit of a commute, but worth it. Listen to Books on Tape.

Oh, BTW, if you choose any of the Seventh-day Adventist schools, they also have their own K-12 schools at the campus as well, every one of them does, so that would then offer an alternative to home-schooling.

I mentioned the main SDA college [S Adv U] at Collegedale, Tenn.

Here is a list of them all:

Atlantic-Union College, South Lancaster, Mass.

Columbia-Union College, Takoma Park, DC/MD (oh-oh, big city, not very safe, but has an enclave around it)

Florida Hosp College of Med Arts, Orlando

Southwestern Adv U, Keene, TExas, this is 40 miles SW of Dallas.

Union-College, small, but is in Lincoln, Neb, the state capital and has the big U of Neb in same city.

Andrews University, very multi-racial, half of students foreign, this is at Berrien Springs, Mich, just north of South Bend, Indiana.

There are also 3 in the West, Loma Linda/La Sierra Universities at Riverside, Cal. Walla Walla College, College Place, Wash State.

And what is probably the second-best after SAU, Pacific-Union College at Angwin Calif, this is in the Napa Valley north of San Francisco.
