[history]
The firearm is often referred to as a civilian version of the military's M-16. The federal warrant issued against John Allen Muhammad identified the specific model as an A-35, XM15 E2S.
The gas-operated weapon is about 343/4 inches long, and it weighs 7.74 pounds without the standard 10-round magazine that Bushmaster supplies with each model.

What does the location of the gun manufacturer have to do with the sniper case? Is this really news? Or just an attempt to focus on gun control?

I guess it's Maine's fault that ten people are dead.
To: jgrubbs
Ummmm... so?
To: jgrubbs
What does the location of the gun manufacturer have to do with the sniper case? All federal gun control laws apply only to guns which have travelled, or whose component parts have travelled, across a state line.

What does the location of the gun manufacturer have to do with the sniper case? Is this really news? Or just an attempt to focus on gun control?Well, I'll try a bit of sarcasm here
Josh Sugarman issued a statement today decrying Maine's gun culture, saying that the ready availability of guns in that state led to an atmosphere where a company can legally manufacture a really scary-looking gun that can actually be used to kill people.
Problem is, some gun-control idiot probably will outdo my hyperbole here.

I wonder if the Globe writes an article on the orgin of every knife and car used in a crime?
To: jgrubbs
Oh, man! I see where this headed!
As punishment, all Mainers must sing "Dixie" three times (all verses, not just the first) and eat three bowls of grits (but without red-eye gravy.) (Yes, I am mean spirited.)
That'll teach those uppity Yankees to make terror weapons.

I'll show you:
Good evening, I'm Dan Rather. in yet another stinging setback for so-called President Bush, in a revelation that could hurt Republicans in the coming elections, it was revealed today that the weapon used by the DC sniper was a .223-caliber semiautomatic rifle made by Bushmaster Firearms, a gun manufacturer in Windham, Maine, the same state that is home to the President's father, former President Geaorg Bush. CBS has been unable to confirm - but we can't rule it out - that those invloved in manufacturing and selling this lethal weapon may have indeed voted for the President.

Is this really news? Or just an attempt to focus on gun control? Given that the source is the Boston Globe, I am assuming that this is a rhetorical question.

Something is still made in Maine besides "Welcome To The Rich Culture of Somalia" signs?

Not to toot my own horn but.....

AK-"47" is chambered for the 7.62x39 round. Much larger, far less accurate but more reliable function-wise.
No, this is most likely a Bushmaster or something similar (probably not actual military issue IMO)

All federal gun control laws apply only to guns which have travelled,...Respectfully, I beg to differ. If Williams had lived in Maine and purchased the weapon from a licensed gun dealer, in Maine, while under a domestic TRO, he still would have committed a federal felony.

I found this related story in the Globe as well:
Chevrolet
Vehicle was made in Michigan
By Globe Staff, 10/25/2002
The vehicle used by the sniper was a 350 cubic-inch fully automatic transmission automabile made by Chevrolet, an automobile manufacturer in Detroit, Michigan.
The vehicle is often referred to as a land yacht. The federal warrant issued against John Allen Muhammad identified the specific model as an Caprice Classic.
The gas-operated vehicle is about 15 feet long, and it weighs 1.74 tons without the standard 4 round tires that Chevrolet supplies with each model.
The particular vehicle traced through a Tacoma, Wash., auto dealer to Muhammad was outfitted with shorter-than-normal 4 barrel carbureator, which is sometimes requested in law-enforcement orders. The ''shorty'' was manufactured to accommodate a larger air filter, which investigators said the sniper used.
Chevrolet, which has been in business for 96 years and has 75,000 employees, makes about 5,000,000 vehicles a year.

"accommodate a telescopic site"This reporter knows all about guns. Everybody knows that "short" is bad!
Do I have to give a sarcasm tag?

I bet the sniper indeed voted for Al Gore. Probably a few dozen times, too.
