A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....10-25-02

A Few of FR's Finest.....
......Every Day

FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues;  salute
and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new
word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who
are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which
we can express ourselves.

Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.  I
can remember lurking when there were only a few regulars who posted, and now there are over 60,000 who have registered for posting privileges. The forum is read daily by tens of thousands
of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I can no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I've been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.

Still that doesn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why, in addition to seeing FR's Finest Military Personnel every day, I thought it might be fun to feature a different FReeper (or FReepers) each day. If you would like to be pictured, or know someone who would, please FReepmail me and we'll turn the spotlight - on YOU - for the day!

And do let me know if you'd like your picture added to the groups of Veterans/Active Military below. I will keep this page updated, and continue to add them to the comment section of the original Veteran's Day thread as well.

Petuniasevan started posting the Astronomy Picture of the Day in March 2002. She thought it would be a great way to introduce interested FReepers to the wonders of the universe. She obtains the links for this thread from NASA.

Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. Petuniasevan adds an Astronomy Fun Fact. She pings interested FReepers to the thread and provides additional commentary. leads discussions and answers questions.

Petuniasevan has suggested the following as memorable APOD's.
October 18 2002
March 24 2002
April 24 2002
June 10 2002
July 20 2002
August 24 2002
September 23 2002

Freeper since 12-14-00

Petuniasevan is from California but she is currently living in Wisconsin with her husband, FReeper poorman.

Petuniasevan became interested in astronomy at an early age and got her first telescope at age six. Currently, she is telescope-deprived but plans to remedy that within a couple of years. She is comparing 'scopes and window shopping.

Favorite threads on FR (besides APOD) are: A Day in the Life of President Bush, (she is a Bush Bot and a distant cousin of the Bush family), veteran-oriented threads, and humor threads (she's on the HMB ping list). She works rotating shifts so it's hard to "hang out" at any of the regular threads, but if her schedule permitted, she would "hang out"at the Daily Dose.

"WI FReeper Get Together"

Petuniasevan and poorman coordinated and organized a WI FReeper get-together at the Prime Quarter Steak House in Appleton WI this past Spring. As with most FReeper social events, everyone enjoyed each other's company and discussed FR activism, politics, ongoing projects, as well as personal hobbies and interests. A good time was had by all.

"Military Service"

Petuniasevan proudly served in the U.S. Air Force 1984-1988 as an aircraft mechanic (B-52G Bombers) at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana. The patches show are, left to right, Air Force Strategic Air Command, Air Force 2nd Bomb Wing. and Air Force 2nd Organizational Maintenance Squadron.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY, PETUNIASEVAN.

"Just for Fun"

Petuniasevan's webpage has a neat link to over 100 smiley faces and over 100 bumper stickers. It can be accessed through her Profile Page. For a rollicking good time, take a look.

CONGRATULATIONS PETUNIASEVAN

I am in awe at the many FReepers we've come to know in the last four months! You are all amazing and wonderful and interesting and just the Finest there is! Astronomy has never been one of my 'things' so and maybe that's why this thread is a bit fascinating today. Thank you for the APOD links! Thank you, petuniasevan! (and thanks for the photo of you and your husband, which will be in next week's new group of military.)

Thank you Billie. The rains knocked out my faulty phone wire and my old cable internet modem on Monday morning. I couldn't get a good dial-up connection with all the crackling on the phone line. Both problems were fixed yesterday, so I'm back!!

Daisy, our introduction to Eielson AFB was spectacular in itself.
Driving from Rapid City, South Dakota to Fairbanks through Canada and over the Alaska Highway in the dead of winter was a whole adventure in itself.

The base is 30 miles south of the city of Fairbanks, and we found ourselves paralleling the south end of the runway about 1:30 in the afternoon on 6 January 1963.
On our left was the setting sun, flanked by twin vertical rainbows!

On our right was the unmistakable and thrilling sight of a U-2 taking off, nearly vertically!
Keep in mind President Eisenhower had 'promised' the Soviet Union we'd not fly them over their territory any more, after the Gary Powers Incident!

.45MAN, you no doubt saw them when you were there, routinely flying over the Soviet Union, didn't you?
My husband was in Security, guarding them.

There was one day when the tower received a May Day call from the pilot of one incoming, with the message he was experiencing "EXTREME VIBRATIONS!"
He managed to bring it down on the runway, rolled to a stop - staggered quite shakily down and said, "Don't talk to me - just get me a drink!"

The U-2 was riddled with holes from weapons fire!
They quickly threw a tarp over it and shoved it into the hangar.
