A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....10-25-02

A Few of FR's Finest.....
......Every Day

FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues;  salute
and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new
word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who
are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which
we can express ourselves.

Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.  I
can remember lurking when there were only a few regulars who posted, and now there are over 60,000 who have registered for posting privileges. The forum is read daily by tens of thousands
of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I can no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I've been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.

Still that doesn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why, in addition to seeing FR's Finest Military Personnel every day, I thought it might be fun to feature a different FReeper (or FReepers) each day. If you would like to be pictured, or know someone who would, please FReepmail me and we'll turn the spotlight - on YOU - for the day!

And do let me know if you'd like your picture added to the groups of Veterans/Active Military below. I will keep this page updated, and continue to add them to the comment section of the original Veteran's Day thread as well.

Petuniasevan started posting the Astronomy Picture of the Day in March 2002. She thought it would be a great way to introduce interested FReepers to the wonders of the universe. She obtains the links for this thread from NASA.

Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. Petuniasevan adds an Astronomy Fun Fact. She pings interested FReepers to the thread and provides additional commentary. leads discussions and answers questions.

Petuniasevan has suggested the following as memorable APOD's.
October 18 2002
March 24 2002
April 24 2002
June 10 2002
July 20 2002
August 24 2002
September 23 2002

Freeper since 12-14-00

Petuniasevan is from California but she is currently living in Wisconsin with her husband, FReeper poorman.

Petuniasevan became interested in astronomy at an early age and got her first telescope at age six. Currently, she is telescope-deprived but plans to remedy that within a couple of years. She is comparing 'scopes and window shopping.

Favorite threads on FR (besides APOD) are: A Day in the Life of President Bush, (she is a Bush Bot and a distant cousin of the Bush family), veteran-oriented threads, and humor threads (she's on the HMB ping list). She works rotating shifts so it's hard to "hang out" at any of the regular threads, but if her schedule permitted, she would "hang out"at the Daily Dose.

"WI FReeper Get Together"

Petuniasevan and poorman coordinated and organized a WI FReeper get-together at the Prime Quarter Steak House in Appleton WI this past Spring. As with most FReeper social events, everyone enjoyed each other's company and discussed FR activism, politics, ongoing projects, as well as personal hobbies and interests. A good time was had by all.

"Military Service"

Petuniasevan proudly served in the U.S. Air Force 1984-1988 as an aircraft mechanic (B-52G Bombers) at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana. The patches show are, left to right, Air Force Strategic Air Command, Air Force 2nd Bomb Wing. and Air Force 2nd Organizational Maintenance Squadron.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY, PETUNIASEVAN.

"Just for Fun"

Petuniasevan's webpage has a neat link to over 100 smiley faces and over 100 bumper stickers. It can be accessed through her Profile Page. For a rollicking good time, take a look.

CONGRATULATIONS PETUNIASEVAN

     1) Click on the graphic to open the Calendar.
     2) Once there you can click on any month and even click to the right to go into next year. Once you are in the month that you joined FR you will need to click on the number in the calendar and then an add item screen will come up.
     3) In the next box enter your name in the "Calendar Text" field and then click on submit.
     4) If any of the screens fail to load simply click on refresh in your browser and that will usually fix it.
     5) If all else fails or simply if you want me to do this for you send me an FReepmail and I will gladly do it for you. ~Mixer

I have been in Maine goin on 7 years and have only seen "Northern Lights" twice. I have seen a bluegrass band by that name 3 times.

LOL! :-)

I guess I have about as much chance of seeing the group as the real thing!

Thanks to both of you for the coffee and sunrise!

Despite the two, I STILL more resemble the second of The Mayor's two graphics!

The highlight, of course, was the Good Friday Earthquake in March of 1964.

.45MAN was there at that time! He talks about the earth moving in a big "ripple." Hopefully, he can take a minute out from work and answer to this!

Do you know the group of three edifices on New Haven Avenue that now is an art museum?

Yes, I can picture it very well. That is really interesting to know it was once a school! Now that you mention it, the architecture kind of gives it away.

[sigh] Even though there are significantly more than 5,000 people in Melbourne, I miss that whole area.

The universe is fascinating. My father was interested in the stars and planets...could tell you how far the sun was from the earth and other facts. I was always more interested in the earth. Guess you could call me a down to earth person.
Thanks for spreading your knowledge of the subject here and for your service to our country!

Madam,

I fear the worst for the locals. The CIA has informed me that al-Clayda has a secret weapon, unavailable to the defenders of the faith. Aerial reconnaissance clearly shows that the fiends have acquired a number of landing craft! This will allow them a freedom of movement not possessed by our ragtag defenders in what is fast becoming The Great Southeast Texas Swamp.

Perhaps a strategic withdrawal is in order, to better fight another day. I fear however that the local will not see the wisdom of this and suffer heavy losses.

When the Good Friday Earthquake struck, I was in the kitchen with the radio playing - the DJ saying, "Oops - must be an earthquake, records rolling off the racks here!"
(don't laugh at 'records'!)
Jolts were common, some 20 per day recorded at the University of Alaska there in Fairbanks, but this one was different.

My husband was 30 miles away at Eielson AFB on duty - my boys (9 & 10) were playing on a high snow mound in the back yard - and I had a split second to decide how to react.
The two-story with basement house began swaying like a ship on a high sea, and it well could have collapsed on me.
Weighing my options, it was 30 below zero outside, and I was certain there would open a chasm with My Name on it out there!

I opted to sit down on the floor with my baby daughter (17 months) on my lap to ride it out - cross-legged and regal, somewhat like Katherine Hepburn on the deck of The African Queen, nonplussed and in command of the situation.

When the snow in the back yard melted in May, there was a crevasse about two inches wide paralleling the house!

What really got your attention was the thought of an aftershock being bigger!
We were without communication with the outside world for several days, family in Florida not knowing if we were safe.

Courage, Oh Noble Defender of The Range!
Surely spirit counts, and that ye knaves and knavelettes have in abundance!

Think of Braveheart's example, and cower not in your rainboots - rise to the occasion and sing strange and wonderful songs as ye go forth - and fifth - and sixth..:)))

I understand Flyer has arranged for airboats for your maneuverability to counter the clever Clays new weapons - fear not.

Prince Valiant thou shalt surely be on the morrow!
The GlocktoberFest Song will be sung forever by The Generations ~ ~ ~

Yea, verily, kind lady, in sooth spirit doth count more than mere words might express - and that spirit do we have in abundance!

However, I cannot answer for Prince Valiant. I am responsible only for Prince Valar and Princess Lalaithina, and frankly I cannot keep up with yet another elven princeling.

(BTW, the Generations rock!)

Y'all don't get it, do you. Think. al-Clayda. Root word - Clay! Add a little - or in this case, a lot - of water and viola! MUD! We may not have to fire a shot. But we will, of course, just to rub it in.
