The last cryptic message from Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose to the Washington-area sniper referred to a Cherokee Indian story about an arrogant rabbit that was duped by the duck he tried to catch.

"You have indicated that you want us to do and say certain things. You've asked us to say, 'We have caught the sniper like a duck in a noose.' We understand that hearing us say this is important to you," Moose said late Wednesday at a televised news briefing, called so authorities could release information on two people sought for questioning in the 13 sniper shootings.

People are acting like the indian legend is the only plausible explanation. It isn't. The "Ladin" explanation seems just as plausible to me. Or it could be the sniper guy just made it up.

Further evidence is needed to resolve this burning issue.

I copied it too. I lay no claim to coming up with it.

That was what got the rabbit into trouble. He boasted to the otter than he could do anything the otter could do- even catch fish. The otter decided to call him on the bluff but made the problem trickier for the rabbit by telling him that he (the otter) also ate ducks. So they went to the river to catch some ducks. The otter went first, dove under the water and caught the duck. The rabbit of course, had the harder time- he made a noose and swam up behind the ducks and lassoed one- it flew away with him on it. The rabbit lets go of the noose and falls in a sycamore stump. He has to eat his own fur to survive. Finally he hears voices and calls out to the people to cut open the stump so they can see how beautiful he is. When they do, he escapes.

Or something like that.

Actually the first person to explain this was Ron Kuby on WABC this morning

Actually, someone posted this last night right after Chief Moose came out and said it

Absoulutely. I posted on that thread last night. I should have referenced it (my bad) ... this is making main stream now, but FR as way ahead of the pack.

Oooooh.... That was good, E.Pluribus. Hmmm... Isn't "laden" spelled with an "en"? Doesn't matter - close enough!

Either spelling is correct. "bin Ladin" in the original Arabic character-set can be translated into many different Latin-alphabet spellings. Something like all the various spelling changes for the name of the capital of China Peking/Peiping/Beijing/whatever

I was wondering that too. This was read before the arrest. The Sniper must have given him a good reason to read this riddle.

But thanks for the info...that makes more sense, though it somehow seems less appropriate.

It's the sniper that hoped to play the role of the duck. He has learned that this trick doesn't work very well with 10-ton rabbits.

I hadn't heard all these explanations. What about the otter? Everybody is focusing on the duck and rabbit but there was an otter in the story as well- he did get the duck.

I kind of took it to be that a group had trained him to kill the infidels and this group as represented by the story would be the otter. The otter does it the right way, he's sneaky and gets away with it. The rabbit screws the pooch and gets caught.

The Sniper practically turned himself in, he wanted to be caught, and this riddle goes along with being caught.

Lots of FReepers emailed FOX last night about this reference, that is how they figured it out.

But, who at Fox gets the bill?

And where on earth did this Muhammed knucklehead hear this "ancient Cherokee Indian story", gimme a break.

It's not related.

A Freeper posted it and Fox News ran with the lead.
