As far as eternal vigilance in protecting liberty, parents and citizens here are better prepared to take action than just about anywhere else in the nation. Virginia is where American liberty was born. We'll die for it. But we won't offer up the kiddies as fodder for a maniac.

Can I put you down as likely to refuse to allow your son(s) to be part of the US military?

Virginia may be where American liberty was born, but with attitudes like yours it will surely die there. It's a good thing for you, that you don't live in Israel.

Closing the schools only feeds these kids anxiety, it's stupid and counter productive

Kid's reactions to this situation mirror that of their parents. If the parents are all worked up and acting like they are under siege, of course the kids will be apprehensive. My kids are fairly nonplussed by the whole thing, they realize that the odds of the sniper shooting anyone that we know, are fairly slim. And this is in light of the fact that the Home Depot in Falls Church is 4 mi. from home, 2 mi. from their school.

A member of my family told me recently that he didn't think this was terrorism because "it is an inefficient use of resources compared to killing 3000 at one time." I am beginning to see that this is the most efficient use of resources possible. For ten dollars worth of bullets and a few other minor expenditures this is shutting down the whole area. The total cost must already be over a hundred million dollars if all is taken into account. Twenty shooters like this could create a national depression the likes of which we have never seen.

What would the Founding Fathers do (WWFFD)?

If there was a British loyalist sniper crawling around near Mt. Vernon, VA or Monticello, VA, near the homes of our great patriots, and sniping off little children, Negro (sic) slaves and White landholders alike, why there would be a mobilization of a civil militia. And even little kids old enough to 'aim low, aim small' would be stationed as counter snipes to take the turncoat terrorists out.

The founding fathers I think would be sad upon hearing of the wobbly-kneed, quivering, cowering response in the 2002 American public mindset as opposed to going on the offensive and taking these bastards out on sight.

There should be a bounty posted and a wanted dead or alive poster, even without description, for anyone caught in the act of sniping.

"If two people are shot by snipers in two cities the same day, I expect half of our media to drop dead of heart attacks"

omg, that made me laugh - you are right, the self serving hysteria the media creates is infuriating.

I also can't stand when they say "this is a very busy news day, (they say this EVERY DAY - no matter what) so "very busy" means nothing.

Your brother was a hero. My thanks for his service. Very, very few of today's 19 year olds could hold a candle to the young men of your father's era.

Much of what you say is sadly, true. But that does not change the accuracy or my feeling about the statement I made.

If this causes more people to home school and educate their children themselves and become less dependent on an over regulating, over burdonsome government ... that is good.

IMHO, we NEED vouchers or some other program to give parents the choice that is (again, IMHO) inately theirs in the education of their own children in this nation ... for exactly the reasons you gave.

"Closing schools is the same line of thinking that believes outlawing guns will make society safer."

Nicely stated

Yes, I thought the same thing last night when I read all the hysterics about closing the schools (meanwhile other counties have been operating cautiously for weeks)

Everyone wants to protect their children, but it's the exact same gun-grabbing mindset popular with the "million moms"...If one child is saved, then taking away all GUNS is justified.

**Why would you close school? It does not make sense. Chicken little...to the tenth power. **

Perhaps LE has information we're not privy to. Perhaps it's prudent to ensure the safety of school children. If my child were in traditional school (we homeschool) I wouldn't be putting her in harms way.

Can I put you down as likely to refuse to allow your son(s) to be part of the US military? No. Unlike the depraved palestinians, however, I don't view children as my front line, used to push forward a military or political aim. Big diff between a five year old girl and a marine, IMHO.

xsmommy I admire your courage and your stand for doing what is best for your children in not allowing fear to be spread to them if at all possible. They do pick up the unspoken, not to mention the spoken attitudes of the adults around them. I pray that if such an incident were to become a problem in my area, that I would have the courage to do as you do in sending the children to school. It makes no sense to keep them home when there is no telling how long it will take to catch this guy. I understand the fear and the caution of the parents who want their children home, for I would feel the same way. But, my heart's desire is not to act on that feeling. I totally believe in being cautious and using wisdom, but I learned a long time ago not to make decisions based on fear, but rather on principle and conviction.

I heard this afternoon that the school boards would be announcing around 4:30PM whether classes would be held tomorrow or not. I missed the announcement and afterwards none of the cable news stations seemed to be carrying that information. Do you know what the decision was? Is school going to be in session tomorrow down there? The ONLY report I saw (on the news ticker at the bottom of the screen) was that a college a few miles from the Ponderosa cancelled all their classes tomorrow "on the advice of the police." What gives? Do you think this guy has said he's decided to target schools now? (I'm not expecting you have the answer to that last question...just stream of conciousness typing!)

I would assume this is NOT some independent prankster leaving cards at the shooting sites, but the shooter or someone tagging along with him.

Do Islamonuts normally have anything to do with tarot cards? It seems to me that if, as someone speculated, this was a Islamonut trying to inspire copycats or even claiming supremacy for Allah, he would hardly leave calling cards that are an invention of the hated West.

Maybe because the lives of the kids attending are more important than how other people in other parts of the country feel about going about normal business.

Damn, I agree with you. Time to slit my wrists.
