I just heard this on the radio while driving. I wish we had more men like him. My prayers for him and his family.

This is the same Joe Foss who was harassed last year by airport "security" personnel over his posession of a piece of metal: his Congressional Medal of Honor.
To: Mrs. P
Foss sure had a better post-war experience than did Boyington, even if, in reality, Pappy shot down more planes.

Joe Foss is a Retired Brigadier General, I wonder why the headline says retired Major. Head of the NFL is nice, but I doubt it's as important that he served as Governor of his state -- and the entire article omits the fact he also served as President of the National Rifle Association (NRA).

WSGW, the local AM station I heard this from first, did state that he was a past president of the NRA.
I didn't know about the harrassment about his medal until I did a search here under his name. They messed with the wrong guy.

My favorite Joe Foss story is the one where he delivered a single finger salute to the captain of a Japanese battleship while flying an up-close pylon turn in front of its bridge.
I hope he is resting comfortably.

You know, I was vaguely remembering something like that about him, but didn't remember for sure if it was Joe Foss. Was that in his biography? I read it a few years ago.

Joe Foss still serves on NRA Board of Directors (most recently elected in 2K), as well as Executive Cmte. First C. Heston diagnosed with Alzheimers and now this. Not a good year for NRA...

Not to take away from Foss (the top MARINE CORPS Ace of WWII) but the top American Ace of WWII was Dick Bong of the Army Air Corps; neither Foss or Boyington (with Flying Tigers victories added, even) is that close.

The article is fairly riddled with errors and omissions.

The article is fairly riddled with errors and omissions. It's the Saginaw News and Birdcage Liner, I'd expect no less than to be riddled with errors and omissions. This paper is so bad (screaming liberals write all the articles) that we have not subscribed for years, especially since we get a free ad paper that is a better size for the bird cage. Keep getting calls from them offering free month subscriptions, but we always say no. A real waste of trees.
