Joe Foss is a Retired Brigadier General, I wonder why the headline says retired Major. Head of the NFL is nice, but I doubt it's as important that he served as Governor of his state -- and the entire article omits the fact he also served as President of the National Rifle Association (NRA).

WSGW, the local AM station I heard this from first, did state that he was a past president of the NRA.
I didn't know about the harrassment about his medal until I did a search here under his name. They messed with the wrong guy.

Joe Foss still serves on NRA Board of Directors (most recently elected in 2K), as well as Executive Cmte. First C. Heston diagnosed with Alzheimers and now this. Not a good year for NRA...

The article is fairly riddled with errors and omissions.

Joe Foss is a Retired Brigadier General, I wonder why the headline says retired Major Clueless media? He was a Marine Major when he got the MoH, but later helped form the S.D. Air National Guard when the Air Force became a seaparate service, which is how he became a Brigadier General. All the state ANG heads are B.G.s, AFAIK. The Adjudent General's of the states, who are over both the Army and Air Guard are Major Generals, usually Army, but sometimes, Air Guard.
