US pastor Falwell draws wrath of Iran over Prophet

TEHRAN, Oct 6 (AFP) - Controversial US Baptist minister Jerry Falwell on Sunday drew the wrath of Iran after he labelled the Muslim Prophet Mohammed "a terrorist".

"This insult of the holy Prophet Mohammed by a Christian priest is part of a propaganda war by the US mass media and the Zionists," state media quoted Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi as saying.

Speaking during a meeting with visiting Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) Secretary General Abdul Wahed Belqeziz, Kharazi said Falwell's comments were "proof that the US wants political, cultural and military domination of the world."

"Islamic countries, and above all the OIC, must not stay silent in the face of such unashamed accusations, and must not permit this clash of religions and civilisations sought by the expansionist and aggressive Zionists," he added.

In an interview to be broadcast Sunday on the CBS television network's "60 Minutes" news programme, Falwell calls the prophet "a terrorist".

"I think Mohammed was a terrorist. I read enough by both Muslims and non-Muslims, (to decide) that he was a violent man, a man of war," Falwell said according to an advance transcript of the interview released by CBS.

"In my opinion, Jesus set the example for love, as did Moses, and I think Mohammed set an opposite example," he added.

Falwell, a leader of the US Evangelical Christian right, has also previously labelled Mohammed a pedophile possessed by the devil.

In 1989, Iran's late supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa, or religious decree, ordering the death of British author Salman Rushdie over his book "The Satanic Verses", which was deemed to be blasphemous.

However there was no immediate reaction to Falwell's comments from Iran's Shitte clergy or the office of Khomeini's successor, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The head of the 57-member Islamic body reportedly told Kharrazi that the OIC would seek an apology for Falwell's remarks.

Great to see the almost unanimous support for Falwell here.

Question to my Right Wing Christian Brethren:

What proportion of Conservative Christians support for Israel is based on prophecy versus morality?

60 Minutes made it sound like prophecy drove the support. Is that true?

Please advise. Hard-right-wing Jews want to know....

1. Falwell is not a priest.

A distinction that may not be very clear to them -- much as most Americans have little idea what the differences between Shi'ites and Sunnis are -- and how you can tell whether somebody's one or the other.

The media always hypes up the prophecy angle, which is pretty insulting to Christians and Jews alike. They make it sound like Christians are basically using Jews and Israel as a means to an end, that we support Israel because of what Israel can give to US, namely the apocalypse via fulfillment of biblical prophecy.

The truth is (keeping in mind that of course there are some Christians out there who do fit the media mold), we love and support the Jews and Israel because God loves them, has a permanent covenant with them, because He will never break His promises to them (and subsequently us), because the very existence of Israel is an awesome testament to HIS very existence and the truth of His Word, because He says He is not finished with them, and because they have suffered much for our sake.

Also, I believe that for most Christians, God has put a love for His people in our hearts. I certainly feel that to be true for myself.

Not to mention the fact that from a purely secular, political, social standpoint, I've done enough research to strongly believe that Israel gets shafted on a regular basis. :)

In the Bible prophecy is there and its from God and it will come true no matter who beleives it or not. The Christians and everyone else should be supporting Israel because of Jewish/Christians values (Morality)

No one in their right mind can beleive the Muslims have have any values that are accepted by God.

When this world winds down to that last big war, IMO it will be between the Muslims and Jews and the Christians. It will not be between Countries.

One large group of people who claim to be Christians have a Human leader who has already said they worship the same God as the Muslims. If that is true then it want be long before the Rapture and the Fireworks that follow.

I'm sure I will get blowed out about this but thats OK. I'll survive.

Hope I have helped in some way.

The Rev Falwell can be counted on to speak the truth when everyone else obfuscates and conceals it.

I'm still waiting for these people to actully refute what Fawell said, rather than just get hysterical over it.

Good point.

Being hated isn't all that bad, if you're hated by the right people?

Get real. IT'S ALREADY A HOLY WAR. The Islamists have already declared war on America. They consider us enemies.

The sooner we realize that the enemy is not muslim terrorists, but MUSLIMS, period, the sooner we can get down to business and get rid of the threat.
