When did the .223 become a "high power" cartridge? I think these people would wet themselves if the saw some of the things Weatherby cranks out.

That means the VA shooting was the real deal, not a copycat . . . and I think, with the D.C. guy now confirmed, puts us at 8 dead . . . when do we get a description of the suspects?

I sure hope the liberal left doesn't use this incident to argue in favor of gun registration... that would be bad news for our 2nd amendment...

How is a rifle "High Powered"? I could see a round being a high powered, but a rifle? They said it was a .223 shot from a high powered rifle, does the rifle plug in or something?

Greta Van Susteren just stated that we should all be on the watchout for people who spend a lot of time practicing shooting or have some sort of obsession with guns because thats the tip the police need.

Nice eh?

I wish these reporters didn't display their ignorance of firearms so prominently. The .223 isn't a high-power rifle by anybody's standards. It's basically a .22 LR bullet in front of a larger cartridge case. The .223 (5.65 NATO) was introduced as a further downsizing from the .308 Win (7.62 NATO) which itself was a downsizing from the military full size .30'06 cartridge. And that doesn't even take into account the REAL high-power stuff like the Weatherbys and Holland & Holland magnums.

Basically anybody can shoot the .223 (very little recoil) and it's chambered for all sorts of rifles. This isn't necessarily some sort of super sniper "Day of the Jackal" type guy. But I hope the police nail him soon. The anti-gunners are dancing with glee in the blood of the slain.

Not too many know about the 72 year old man shot in DC last night (I didn't know he died) because of the press blackout.

I just now found out it was related to the others.

The public needs to be informed and safe and ever watchful.

Transcript from tonight's Connie Chung. Looks like we'll have to ban all these dangerous high caliber rifles:

KATHLEEN KOCH, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Connie, well, as you just reported, we have now perhaps two more shootings. And sources very close to this investigation here in Montgomery County, Maryland, now tell us that they believe that the killer or killers here or at least a copycat has struck again, this because of that shooting now in Fredericksburg, Virginia, that occurred late this afternoon.

A 43-year-old woman was going about her daily activities, loading packages into her van in front of a Michaels craft store in the Spotsylvania mall, when she was shot in the lower back. Now, police say that the bullet passed through her body. And the woman is now hospitalized, in stable condition. But unlike the cases here in Maryland, in this case, police have found some evidence right on the scene. They have found at least one shell casing. And sources close to the investigation tell us that it was likely this type of a bullet that was fired. This is a .223, a high-caliber bullet. And, Connie, it's the very same type of bullet that was used, police believe at least, in these Transcript from tonight's CNN Broadcast with Connie Chung:

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

(voice over): Police say a high-powered assault or hunting rifle like these was used in the shooting spree, the bullets high caliber most likely a .223. Using them with such deadly precision, experts say, takes skill.

What are the odds that the casing that was found is from a rifle that was used in some/all of the shootings? The shooter obviously is planning on one-shot=one-kill, and thus would have no need for a semi-auto (esp. since a bolt rifle would tend to be more accurate). The idea that a shooter with this level of planning would accidentally leave behind a couple of cartridge casings is absurd. Obviously the shooter wanted to leave behind casings. Given that to be the case, why should one believe the shooter left casings from the murder weapon instead of some other firearm?

I thought this was a "high-powered" rifle. .223 doesn't sound very "high powered."

Once again the anti-gun media uses threatening words to frighten people into giving up their liberty.

Question: Why did the MD police truck all those ridiculous rifles, etc. to show the press? That's the most idiotic thing I've ever seen. Once again, a tragedy is being hi-jacked by the anti-gun lobby and their allies to promote a fear of guns. You know, they're single-shot .223 rifles that could do the same damage from the same range.

From an AP report on FOX:

"Each Maryland victim was felled by a single bullet, apparently from a high-powered rifle or handgun. Police said evidence indicated the killer was some distance away and used .223-caliber bullets."

HANDGUN!?!?!?! I love to see the handgun that fires a .223, how can news people are so anti-gun when they don't know a dang thing about guns. You'd think someone would a least get a little knowledge about a topic before they passed judgement!!!!!
