I thought this was a "high-powered" rifle. .223 doesn't sound very "high powered."

Once again the anti-gun media uses threatening words to frighten people into giving up their liberty.

Police were also still looking for a white cargo van, and had refined their description of the vehicle, but did not release the additional details

From WTOP news

More Details on White Box Truck

Montgomery County Police Department released more details about the vehicle it is looking for. Here are the updated specifications:
White Box Truck:

No lift on the rear.

Rear back-bumper that extends from body of the truck held by two supporting beams.

The rear passenger side of the bumper is bent in approximately 3-4 inches toward the rear wheel.

The vehicle has six wheels (4 rear wheels).

Two lines of block lettering on the side. Top line approximately 6 inches tall. Bottom line approximately 3 inches tall. Dark purple or faded black in color.

Lettering on rear. Two lines of writing.
Block lettering. Each line approximately 3 inches tall.

Roll Up Rear Door.
Cab is smaller than the box portion and boxy in appearance.

Sounds like they have some low resolution photos.

High caliber indeed. What can you expect from newsgals and the guyweenies who "report" with them?

I hope it's not a Mini 14; that will start the ban the "automatic weapons" screed again.

5 bucks says it'll end up being a AR-15 or one of the variants.

Not related yet, as far as I know.

ATF rep just announced the VA incident was also a 223 bullet and the DC bullet was also a 223 and one other MD killing was also a 223. The other bullets are not in as good shape and are still being looked at. He made the statement that they are considering all of those IDed so far as being related.

Is it me, or does that look like something similar to a later version of the M1 Carbine?

Nope - it's not you - that's what it looks like. Saving my pennies now to get the Mini-30.

.223 are deadly.

Granted, they don't compare to a 7.62x54R (I use a 100 year old Moisin Nagant 7.62 x 54R with all matching serial numbers and high bluing!!! HEH HEH), but they do kill. M16's use .223's. The small bullet size is made up for the by the high velocity.

I think people here think a .223 is merely a slightly larger bullet than a .22 . It is a slightly larger bullet PLUS a big cartridge (compared to a .22) loaded with higer velocity powder.

A .223 is not a "manly" bullet, but it is very deadly.

At the rate this is going, a "sniper" rifle will be one with a sight at the end of the muzzle.

Thanks for the truck description in #122.

Sounds like someone got a low res capture on surveillance tape.

If my analysis is correct, a few days after they find the abandoned truck, these shooters will show up in another town.

They probably take turns pulling the trigger.

I would suspect that terrorists, MIGHT prefer loading their own items, so as to NOT be detected immediately by law enforcement reviews of ammo purchases. And .223 components are rather easy to obtain.

An exotic possibility is that they're using a Remington Accelerator, a 30-06 or .308 case with a sabot .223 bullet in it. High accuracy, and fantasic velocity. There'd be no rifling marks on the bullet, and the plastic sabot would blow away with the wind, and never be found.

I'm a bit unsure of what has been found so far. An intact bullet? A fired case? It seems the reporting is low on fact, and high on anti-gun hype.

It sure seems convenient that they have a fired case, considering how careful the shooters have been up to now. There are brass catchers for most brands of semi-autos, and anybody firing a bolt action would be unlikely to cycle the bolt, and lose the empty case, when he was getting one-shot kils.

There is something that smells about all of this.

Three comments (well, nit-picky observations...)

FWIW, That chart posted showed only the 223 as boxer primed. All 223, 308 and 30-06 I know of is boxer. Depriming berdan is a bitch and not worth the trouble, IMHO.

As far as this shooter using a "hunting rifle" goes, here in Virginia and neighboring states, it is illegal to hunt with a 223, except for varmits & small game, as it is considered too small a round to reliably drop a deer, bear, etc. Not that it wont kill you, but it is a streach to call it a "hunting" round/rifle

Lastly, I have been lead to believe that a 223 is designed to break-up/tumble when entering a body, causing massive internal damage, unlike a 30-06, 308, or 8mm which will go clean thru you. So In find it odd that the bullet that passed thru the body of the person in Fredricksberg could be a 223.

What?! No NRA or CMP stickers on the back bumper?? I'm waiting for the Brady Bunch to start accusing the shooters of having "Charleton Heston is my President" bumper stickers on their truck./sarcasm

Question: Why did the MD police truck all those ridiculous rifles, etc. to show the press? That's the most idiotic thing I've ever seen. Once again, a tragedy is being hi-jacked by the anti-gun lobby and their allies to promote a fear of guns. You know, they're single-shot .223 rifles that could do the same damage from the same range.

FYI, 1 Lb of powder lasts about 30 to 34 rounds with normal .50 bmg loads. ;)
