Salmon glut keeps prices down

HALF MOON BAY - California fishermen are bringing home a huge haul of king salmon this season -- but it's been a mixed blessing.

A glut of the pink-fleshed fish means buyers are paying much lower prices, a problem the California Salmon Council says is made worse by similarly "phenomenal" seasons in Oregon and British Columbia, and stiff competition from farmed salmon imported from Chile and Norway.

A glut of salmon? Impossible. Everyone knows that the slash-and-burn Bush administration has let the corporate polluters ravage the countryside and pillage the seas, endangering untold species, threatening bio-diversity while introducing mutant strains into the DNA pool. </sarcasm>

Salmon: One of the healthiest fish to eat, it's also one of the cheapest available in our stores in Upstate New York (even cheaper than catfish).

When fish farms were started (originating in our area), one of the intentions was to make some of these species available to all.

In the old, old days, the English government ruled that two days be "fish days" to accomodate the fishing industry.

I no longer fish and "cheap" farm grown salmon suits me just fine.

I love salmon (grilled---yummmm). It costs $7.99/lb in the grocery stores here in Atlanta, more at the Fresh Markets. How much are you paying up there in NY? I would love to have some evidence to present to our store why they are charging too much!

We're paying $3.99 for farm raised (on sale) and $5.99 for other salmon.

I buy a large quantity when it's on sale and freeze it.

Usually cook extra and eat it cold..with a horseradish sauce.

It's a great healthy snack.

I'm surprised at your prices. Are all your fish prices high? I lived in Williamsburg, Virginia for a while. I don't even remember salmon in the store but our local catches were awesomely cheap and I ate fish almost every day. I also found no desire for salt on my other food and must have been getting enough with the ocean fish.

I paid 4.99/pound sale price yesterday at Meijer's in Saginaw. Sockeye salmon was 6.99 (I think) and much prettier but not on sale.

My 5 and 6 year old boys each eat easily a half pound apiece when we grill this. It's what's for supper tonight! Leftovers are rare, but I like to put them in a fritata. Or, just make a salmon salad sandwich.

Thank you to any salmon fishermen on FR who might read this for all the work you do so that I can feed my guys good healthy fish like this!

Here in metro-Detroit area, I can find whole salmon for $1.99/lb on sale. Salmon fillets/steaks run about $2.99/lb on sale. Wish you could, too, because it is yummy indeed.

Well, I've got a trip to Ireland coming up in October. I'll probably get my fill of seafood for a while. I hear they make a good dark beer that goes well with oysters too.

This is like the good old days in medieval England, when the apprentices banded together and demanded of their masters that they not be forced to eat salmon more than twice a week!

Salmon IS a bit pricey here in the Atlanta area, but it's still good. I marinate it in a soy-sesame oil-mustard-pepper marinade and slap it on the grill. No leftovers, and the dog and the cats fight over the scraps.
