What I'd like to know is where were all these people who are so concerned with "scientific method", distrusting the media accounts, pre-judging from newspaper accounts & hearsay, reminding everybody that WE DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED, and asking everybody why they're so quick to judge when poor, misunderstood Alejandro Avila was being crucified in the press for "allegedly" kidnapping and murdering that girl.
Was anybody sticking up for him? I mean, after all, WE DON'T KNOW, so where were all these people with such a high threshold of proof when Don Matthews shoots someone, when another man was being flayed alive in the press?
Face it, tpaine, 'cos it's something most other people will admit to: You're maintaining your so-called "objectivity" because Don Matthews shared some of the same ideas as you. You're not so concerned with "waiting for the real facts" and "distrusting the word of the police" when the bad guy is somebody you have nothing in common with, like Avila.
So your feigned "concern" over "prejudging" has nothing whatsoever to do with your dedication to objectivity and "waiting for all the facts", but everything to do with ideological kinship.
We all do it to one extent or another--the militant pro-lifers will, if not exactly defend, make all kinds of excuses for the murderer of an abortion doctor. The 2nd Amendment guys will think a guy arrested with 50 zillion guns and bazookas is being persecuted by police. Your "I want to smoke pot without getting arrested" crowd will crucify a son who called the cops on his pot-growing dad, and many of the people who nitpick over their Constitutional rights will be the first to talk about throwing a rapist off a cliff.
So please don't pretend that you're concerned with objectivity when it comes to Matthews. If Matthews was an eco-terrorist, pro-abort, WTO-protesting loon who shot a cop and was killed himself, you wouldn't give a rat's A$$ about "pre-judging".

Yeah....ummm.....I wish I could get streaming audio to work on my computer. Oh well.

Oh, I am all for the idea for your show. I trust it will be a hoot, though I don't envy you the task of trying to control the discussion. I just figure, judging from the caliber of some of the posts I see here now and then, I suspect some callers won't hestitate to spit nastiness over the radio.
You have my sympathies. And my curiosity: I'll be listening.

How about a breif summary of the program to post on your web page?

For example, wondering who in the chain of command was involved in the decisions leading to an officer shooting is not a 'crackpot idea' to me. ROFL! As if the officer has to wait to get authorization before using deadly force. That IS a crackpot idea. If you're a cop and somebody pulls a gun on you, you don't have to waste time calling your boss before you draw your weapon and stop that idiot dead in his tracks.
In the post in question, betty boop said:
Here's what I need to know: Who authorized the use of force at the scene? What name is written down on the bottom line? If I could get an answer to that question, then perhaps I could achieve greater clarity WRT this problem.
Your answer is, betty, that no one authorized force before the fact. The cops were using their discretion, which they are allowed to do under conditions like that. The subsequent investigation will clarify whether the surviving cops who fired on Matthews acted in the right or in the wrong.
You can wait for the results of that investigation to get "clarity" if you want, but as for me, I don't believe the cops are lying when they said what happened.

From what I read, it looks like Don was first pulled over ten minutes before the shoot-out. So, not such a silly question and not a 'crackpot idea'.

Luis, you're a good and fine guy. But this thread reminds me of the old joke about about "the triumph of optimism over experience".
Best regards :)

This week, on The Banana Republican Radio Hour, I will be hosting a spirited discussion on why conservatives eat our own. I will also be addressing the anti-FReeper phenomenom, as well as touching on why people get banished.
As a conservative, I recognize the different levels, or maybe a better word would be "degrees" of conservatism, and would like to explore the possibilities of holding together a coalition of like-minded individuals, or if that's even possible at this stage in our history.
Tune in and call in!!!

This guy we pulled over....we have a feeling that he will take off, then we'll stop him and he'll take off again, then he's gonna pull a gun on us. If he pulls a gun on us, can we pull ours? Let me know. LOL!

Alejandro Avila was being crucified in the press for "allegedly" kidnapping and murdering that girl. So what? The press be d*mn*d. They're crucifying Matthews, too, even though he's already a dead man. On questions like this, the news media are irrelevant anyway.
What matters is Alejandro Avila will get his day in court. And so will Don Matthews, for the Grand Jury will be getting his case soon. Whatever decision the Grand Jury returns, I will accept it with equanimity and in good faith. That's the American way....
We may not get perfect justice in this world; but the conclusions of a Grand Jury, whatever they may be, are likely to be more deliberative and impartial than the press reports; not to mention that what we have in evidence so far are the statements of parties-at-interest which have yet to be corroborated by objective, arm's-length witnesses.
It may turn out that there are NO such independent witnesses. Thus the Grand Jury presumably will be working mainly from the findings of the police investigation. I gather from what I've read, the police are scrupulously conducting it "by the book," owing in part to the age and relative inexperience of the LOEs involved. I have every reason to believe that this investigation is/will be a completely fair one.

From police statements, we know that one of the officers phoned higher command authority to ask whether they should break off the chase. Apparently, he was answered in the negative. I would personally hate to be the officer that made that decision. If nothing else, if I were he, I'm sure I'd be finding my life quite unpleasant right about now.
To: betty boop
Keep spinning. You are still doing your best to find some chink in the police story, instead of facing squarely that Matthews acted like an outlaw. You don't need all this deliberation, do you? But you WANT it so it can be used to put off making some hard judgements about your friend.
To: one_particular_harbour
My point is asking the question is not a crackpot idea.
Get it.
Your crackpot comment implies militia / freeman ideology. This question is not an example of that ideology.
