National Park Service Ranger Killed in Shooting Near U.S.-Mexico Border

The Associated Press

TUCSON, Ariz. Aug. 9 — A National Park Service ranger was killed Friday in a shootout with suspected smugglers near the U.S.-Mexico border, authorities said.

The ranger was responding, along with the U.S. Border Patrol, to a call for assistance from Mexican authorities who were chasing two men in a vehicle that crossed the border into the Organ Pipe National Monument.

Authorities were still investigating what happened, and it wasn't immediately clear why the men were being chased.

Dale Thompson, chief park ranger at the monument, said the shootout took place about 100 yards north of the border in a rugged stretch of desert known for both drug and people smuggling.

The ranger's identity wasn't released.

An act of war is committed against the US

B.S. This was not an act of war. Public schools have really deteriorated lately.

"We have Nicaragua, soon we will have El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Mexico. One day, tomorrow or five years or fifteen years from now, we're going to take 5 to 10 million Mexicans and they are going into Dallas, into El Paso, into Houston, into New Mexico, into San Diego, and each one will have embedded in his mind the idea of killing ten Americans."

--Thomas Borge, Nicaragua Interior Minister as quoted in the Washington Times, March 27, 1985

That's close enough to war for my tastes.

Damn Rav, you do have a redeeming quality. You just recognized one of the best and most under-rated songwriters of our time until his fairly recent demise.

I salute you....if only momentarily...

La cucaracha, la cucaracha
Ya no puede caminar

That's Pancho Villa's old marching song.

Here's something a little more recent, Traición y Contrabando...

Salieron de San Ysidro procedentes de Tijuana
traían las llantas del carro repletas de hierba mala
eran Emilio Varela y Camelia la Tejana.

Pasaron por San Clemente los paró la inmigración
les pidió sus documentos, les dijo - de dónde son?;

Sonaron siete balazos, Camelia a Emilio mataba
la policía sólo halló una pistola tirada
del dinero y de Camelia, nunca más se supo nada.

Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with this incident.

That likely works better on the Arizona border than the Cubano flavoured Espanol I picked up while living with my dad when he worked at the CalTex/Texaco refinery in Santa Clara does around Texas. Sometimes a word, phrase or pronounciation draws some funny looks, and sometimes, outright laughture.

No gunshots or stabbings, so far...

If the fedgov stood aside, we could seal the border air tight at no cost in one month.

Just put out a call for volunteers to guard our southern border, "bring your own rifle and camping gear".

I would not want to stroll past Billy Ray Beauchamp from Lousiana's .22-250. Or "Skeets" Southerby from Montana's 300 winmag. Etc.

Just a dream.

I just hope this man's death is not swept under the rug, and, ignored.

How much of a reward for your head have the narcotrafficantes placed upon your head? Or are you one of their *little fingers*?

Kindly pass along my own condolences with those of most other FReepers, I'm sure. And as is usually said at such times, if there is anything we can do for the family on behalf of their loved one, kindly make us aware of how we might be of service.

Eso es posible. Ella ahora es uno de misterios de la vida, recordado en la canción triste.
