NEW YORK, Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- As the debate about a U.S. invasion of Iraq continues in Washington, President George W. Bush's administration is quietly getting ready for a fight, Newsweek reports in the current issue. U.S. munitions plants have put on extra shifts to rebuild arsenals depleted during the Afghan war, and a few hundred uniformed personnel are working as advance teams in Jordan and elsewhere, assessing the need for new airstrips, wider roads and the like, Newsweek reports. And even before Saddam Hussein became a priority target, the U.S. Department of Energy was working to get America's strategic petroleum reserve up to its full capacity of 700 million barrels -- enough to meet U.S. energy needs for more than 80 days in a crunch, report National Security Correspondent John Barry and Diplomatic Correspondent Roy Gutman in the August 12 issue of Newsweek (on newsstands Monday, August 5).

I doubt that,although most of the oil we do refine comes from the ME,being here in Texas,there is plenty of oil to refine.No,I think if we go to war we are gonna need all the jetfuel we can get.Fitting isn't it,that we use ME oil to fuel our planes and tanks against them.

Could repairs be waiting because they don't want to do the expenditure if they think they won't be getting oil for a while?

Don't know if the story is true or not, but I would think that if they thought the the supply was going down, it would be a good time to take a refinery out of production for repair.

On the other hand, if you wanted to keep production up, you would postpone the shutdown.

I still say not until after elections. Something tells me that Powell and the state dept. are going to try and p.c. this thing to death and make it look like we exhausted every possible solution to war ala Taliban. I am thinking into early next year to be honest. I dunno why but that has stuck with me for so long on this inevitable invasion and ousting.

I just really believe this will be a post election issue.

Well, if you wanted to hold down expenditures until the next fiscal year, knowing that you weren't going to have oil to refine, wouldn't you do this as a prudent business decision?

On the other hand, it could be simple incompetence by the higher ups. Who knows?

And all of Saudi Arabia's oilfields, and all of Iran's. $5/barrel for EVERYBODY. It's a great way to stave off a depression.

I'm sure the Bush Administration did not tell anyone at any refinery what the timing is for a war in Iraq. I doubt many in the military know. However, filling the Strategic Reserve is a significant gesture because it's being done at a time when oil prices are not low by historical standards.

It would be nice to be filling it up with $19 or $20 oil, but it has to be done now.

I still doubt whether we've sufficiently rebuilt our supply of bombs after Afghanistan. We'll need far more in Iraq, in all likelihood, and we were just about out a few months ago.

They may not have told them the timing however I am sure that a refinery of this magnitude would have some strategic qualities.

Aug/September too hot in Iraq unless just bombing to soften them up prior to ground campaign.

Second, Administration has to go to Congress first for authorization. This will take all of September.

Politically, I want action to commence in late October.

I read on another thread how some tanks are changing colors to desert sand color basically.

There are also reserve call ups......possibly just switching people with the war on terrorism though and not a sign of anything with Iraq.
