Chuse is the archaic spelling of "choose" and, yes, it appears in the Constitution exactly like that.

"Chuse" is the alternate spelling of "chews".

The spelling of English words was not standardized until the late 19th century. I believe Daniel Webster had something to do with it.

In the 18th century, when the Constitution was written, spelling was not standardized, and it was not considered incorrect to use a variant spelling.
