"I'm very concerned about the selling of cigarettes online because of the ease that children can buy them," said Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., co-chair of the Congressional Internet Caucus. "That's an issue we need to address."

I'm not exactly sure this is such a big problem, but it does need to be addressed. But taxing law abiding citizens is NOT the way to do it.

Go after the cyber companies that are selling them to the kids - that is what needs to be done - not attacking adults.

Does anyone know if there are any rules or regs regarding growing your own tobacco???? I met someone in nebraska who was growing his own organic tabacco (sounds healthy doesn't it)........but seem to remember him discussing some laws regarding this (although, I think he was ignoring them)

I have a question regarding the Indians selling tobacco. If they can gamble, etc. on their reservations because it's considered their jurisdiction, I don't see how anyone can stop them from selling cigaretts over the internet -- can't they use the same law that lets them set up gambling to exempt them from whatever nonsense the state's have set up on tobacco sales? I don't really understand the law in this area, but it looks to me like the states might not be able to stop this.

The Reservations are a Sovereign State. The are protected from laws and BY laws.

Like one Chief outside of New York City said: until cigarettes are illegal, leave me alone. The FBI also ask him how many cigarettes did he sell in a day: he told them “It’s none of your business.”

As I see it, $1.5 billion has been SAVED due to online cigarette sales.

That money saved is just as good in our pockets and on our tables as it is the state coffers. You sure know it!

Gabz, as well as stores that sell to minors. You know the stores have that "We Card" going on, and if they get busted from a teenagers sting for selling tobacco, it's their own fault.

I'm really tired of adult smokers getting the bad rap because of a few bad apples. That's for sure.

I know you weren't asking me, Anniie - but I am not in favor of selling cigs to kids.

My argument against claims such as the Rep from Virginia is that increasing taxes, which is exactly what taxing internet sales of cigs is, is not the way to stop the problem.

Taxation of internet sales of cigarettes is actually an unfair taxation, as other things are not taxed. when all hings are subject to taxation, then I will drop my argument about the cigarettes.

But going back to the sales to kids - why should law abiding citizens be penalized for the acts of those not abiding by the laws.? I realize we all do that to a certain extent. But in this case it is the vendors not properly identifying their customers. Identify the vendors selling to minors and fine them.

Don't fine the customers who are legitimate. Increased taxes does just that.

Hmmmm . . . wonder if some of the tribes gave big campaign contributions to various governors to raise tobacco taxes!!! LOL -- they must be loving it!

Don't we all, or at least try to. Except for that one word, I liked your post.

Then I went to "Find in forum" and saw your post on Silent Cal, one of my favorite presidents.

You can legally grow your own, I think there is a limit to the acreage you can use on your property, but thats o'kay, seeds can be bought on line.

Thanks for your response. I am still trying to find any indication in this article, however, that Rep. G. is concerned about the taxation aspect of this matter.

As I said earlier, I didn't realize that a question is to be considered a "flame." I'm not sure how asking a question to obtain clarification constitutes an immature response. However, I'm sorry I asked - didn't realize you were so paranoid. I'll not bother you again.
