Man arrested for burning kitten on grill July 16, 2002 Posted: 4:03 PM EDT (2003 GMT)

A neighborhood friend of Sherry Scott holds the kitten they named 'Lucky,' in a recent handout photo.

LIBERTY, Missouri (AP) -- A man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly burning a kitten on a barbecue grill as several other people stood around and watched in amusement.

A witness pulled the scorched, 7-week-old tabby from the hot coals, but it was severely injured and had to be put to death, police said.

"They kept saying, `Meow, meow,' and they were poking at it with a stick," said Sherry Scott, who burned her hand grabbing the kitten.

Charles C. Benoit, 24, was charged with animal abuse, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. He was jailed on $10,000 bail.

Jim Roberts, spokesman for the Clay County prosecutor's office, said he does not expect anyone else to be charged, because no witnesses could identify the others.

Scott said that on Friday night, she saw 10 or 12 people at the barbecue grill in the courtyard of the apartment complex where she lives. Scott said she asked what they were cooking, and they said it was a cat. She said the group taunted her, daring her to rescue the cat.

She said the group scattered when she threatened to call police. She said she pulled the kitten from where it had been shoved into the coals at the back of the grill. Its tail, whiskers, fur, eyes and throat were scorched.

"I called him Lucky because I thought I got him out of there just in time," she said.

Scott said she and other residents stayed up Friday night trying to nurse the kitten with an eye dropper of milk. But animal control officers decided that because of its respiratory injuries and inability to swallow food, it had to be destroyed.

"If you would have seen him, you would have cried," said Sheri Simpson, one of the residents who helped care for the kitten.

the law should definitely discourage such a thing.

Why?

They probably aren't a risk to humans since most people who do this sort of thing draw a line between human and animal - they don't respect animals as "human" as the animal rights people do.

There have been studies that suggest those who have committed serious acts against people started out abusing animals first. I know one thing, I would not want this character anywhere near my kids.

BTW, I'm not a member of PETA or anything of the sort, I like to hunt and fish occassionally and gut the catch myself. But at the same time, I don't believe in torturing animals for the sake of it. It was the pleasure they got out of it that was sick.

You know a lot about being "soulless," it seems.

I know an animal doesn't have one, in the human sense. They are not self aware, for starters.

I actually tend to agree with you.

-But this kind of thing has gone on quite a bit over the centuries, especially in cultures where people have not been brainwashed by the likes of BAMBI and other "talking animals."

It is bad behavior, no doubt. And I wouldn't want to hang around guys who get their kicks doing this kind of thing either. It just doesn't rise to the level of getting the "authorities" involved, unless the cat was someone elses property.

If it's his own kitten, it's none of my business. It just doesn't rise to that level.

I most definitely think the freepers "I'd like to give this guy a taste of his own medicine" over reaction is somewhat comical.

That is what I thought was somewhat amusing.

This guy deserves nothing better then being shoved into a pit of coals and poked with a stick. Let him see how it feels.

Do you know what I think every time I read one of these types of threads? I think of what a wise man once told me:

"If you live like there's no God, you better be right."

"What animals "feel" is not what I would interpret as "suffering" in the human sense."

It's pretty easy to say you're wrong about that. Animals suffer when they get hurt and when they're lonely. I have also noticed a negative reaction when they don't like something. Cats and dogs will shake their heads "no" when they don't want to co-operate.

This is the sickest...what's wrong with that group?? I hope Charles C. Benoit's cellmate think's he's sexy and nicknames him "Babe". It's not enough, but it's something, at least.

But these people did so for the enjoyment of watching it suffer. That is wrong no matter how you cut it.

Yeah, reminds of the the time I saw some clueless "people" decide that they should post their gripes about professional atheletes in the Daryl Kile breaking news post.

Some people just don't get that there is a time for everything, and sometimes that time is just not now!

Hey RobRoy, how 'bout keepin' your mouth shut? I hope you knew enough to keep it shut when you killed the woman's dog. Or did you tell her that she needn't worry about her "souless" dog?

You know I once heard a story where a man called Paul Harvey to ask about whether or not his beloved dog would go to heaven. He had heard that animals don't go and said that he had been all alone for years and didn't want to go to heaven with out his companion. Paul Harvey said that he did not know but would ask a trusted source. Well the answer he got from Billy Graham was that heaven is a perfect place and that if he needed his dog to make it complete, God would have his dog be there by his side.
Sounded like a good answer to me!

"How could that crowd just stand around and laugh?"

I'd like to know the same thing. How can anyone enjoy the torture of helpless creatures, and yet still claim to be human?

They are not self aware, for starters.

That is simply not true. There have been many experiments where primates have show clear signs of self-awareness. In these experiments, they put a mirror in the cages with the animals for some time. Later, after some time, they painted red blotchs on the animals forheads at night. The next day, while many animals would have no idea they are looking at themselves in the mirror, there are primates who immediate try to wipe their own foreheads - indicating a keen sense of self awareness.

The more I see this stuff, the less hope I have for our race.

Me too.

If these stories were emblazoned "Brought to you by PETA" do you think folks might clue in that their emotions and passions were being manipulated?

I fail to understand why the senseless murder of the unborn -- deaths whose brutality boggles the mind -- doesn't work us up any longer the same way the senseless torture of some dumb animal does.

I've every respect for animals, mind you. It's one reason I don't eat meat as a matter of course even though I'm by no means a vegetarian. I prefer saving it for special occasions and limiting myself to stocks as a rule.

Cruelty to animals is not only despicable but a terrible sin for we stewards of creation.

But we are a nation who enshrines in principle the right for any woman to dispose of her unborn child as she sees fit ... regardless the FACT most abortions stop a beating heart.

All this sound and fury about cruelty to animals seems a bit of a put-on. Time to get used to some post-Christian realities, folks. Such disregard for suffering and devaluation of ALL life will be the norm, not the exception.

Nearly all serial killers got started by torturing animals first.

A KITTEN is "walking meat" to you?? You mean a locomotive mammal is "walking meat" to you? It's ok to cook them live?? Wow...sick. Stay away from my dog, bud, or you'll me so much NON-walking meat.

Sometimes they're better judges of people than most people. They can literally smell hostile intent. Especially dogs.

Callousness builds and builds, even if they don't become serial killers, someone who enjoys this has real sociopathic tendencies.
