The fire department in DC is something else. The chief along with several of his assistants was found to have faked his credentials. During the last two fires the hoses didn't work and the firefighters had to borrow garden hoses from the neighbors or something like it.

If they start saying that the guy who was injured "might be Latino", then it's probably a terrorist! (Any topless bars nearby? They draw Jihadis like a magnet.)

Come on we have fellow freepers in DC......no joking until we know this is nothing...

I agree.

That said, I wish FReepers would have the same concern about us California FReepers when there's a report of an earthquake or some such thing on in our state.

Thanks for the info. That's news to me. The fire chief's name is "Ronnie Few". Found this recent article from July 10.

Grand Jury Labels Ronnie Few a 'Bandit'

(Washington) -- What does $5,700 for a dozen pairs of Ray Ban sunglasses have in common with $300 spent for a dress uniform to wear to a wedding? Both were purchased by former D.C. Fire Chief Ronnie Few allegedly using government money in his days running the Augusta, Georgia fire department.

A special grand jury investigating Few's tenure down south issued a report calling him a "bandit" who disregarded department policy.

Few hasn't been indicted ... yet. But the Augusta district attorney says indictments could come when the grand jury wraps up its investigation in the coming weeks.

Mayor Tony Williams says he thinks the process in Georgia should play itself out, but it has nothing to do with Few's job in D.C.

Few resigned as D-C fire chief back in May after a stormy two year tenure. But his resignation doesn't take effect until July 31st. Adrian Thompson was named interim fire chief last month.

For those not familiar with the Washington, DC area, I offer this:

The area of the explosion (Freindship Heights) is no the DC-Maryland border. It is far away from the monumental core of the city.

It is near the Headquarters of GEICO. It is near Bethesda-Chevy Chase, MD. It is not too far from American University and WRC-TV, the local NBC-owned TV station. I can think of nothing special that a terrorist would want to hit. It is possible that if it was a terrorist, he was going after one of two shopping areas in Friendship Heights. One is a small mall that houses a Neiman-Marcus store, and the other is a Hecht, Co. Store across the street. There are a number of shopping centers in that area of town.

If you know where Georgetown is, this area is "up" Wisconsin Avenue from Georgetown, about 4 or 5 miles.

A terrorist might choose this area because it is wealthy and mostly white.

Not really.

Let's just say I was partying a bit too much back when that was on. ;)
I do remember the Fly Girls and the Fire Marshal Bill routine.

Gotta wonder what the D.C. government saw in Few -- he's just been indicted for his acts in his prior job: Georgia grand jury accuses Few of crimes .

There's a "Beans and Franks" joke in there somewhere.

D'OH!

Could be several of the largest dimocrat gas bags all exhaled at once in the parking garage, the fumes were ignited by a still-red-hot manifold.

Nadler, Frank, Waxman, Conyers, Shumer....

:D

Either way, whether it was a terrorist or not, it sounds like no great damage occured. I'm glad for that.

Since I'm in the DC area, I know which TV stations usually have the best news coverage... which isn't much, right now. We have this from WUSA TV9 and this from WTOP, the local all-news radio. Here's the text from WTOP:

Explosion in Northwest Evacuates Two-Block Stretch

(Washington) -- A two-block stretch in Northwest D.C. is being
evacuated after an explosion inside a parking garage.

D.C. Police spokesman Sergeant Joe Gentile says buildings in a two-block radius of 5225
Wisconsin Avenue are being evacuated. Wisconsin Avenue is closed from Harrison Street
up to the Montgomery County line.

Gentile says it's unclear if there was a fire, or just an explosion. He says the evacuations are
a precaution until it's determined whether the blast is the result of some device, or just a car
malfunction.
Gentile says the explosion happened shortly before two afternoon. Police, fire, the bomb
squad and hazmat teams are all on the scene.

The injured man is in serious condition at Washington Hospital Center. Witnesses tell
WRC-TV the man was on fire.

The Jenifer Street Metrorail entrance to Friendship Heights station is closed, but the station
remains open from other entrances.

I'm on Wisconsin Ave up in Bethesda. I've been listening to the radio for some time but have yet to hear anything. My guess is that it was a small accident and no reason to grab my things and take off early.

"Know what? Maybe when Homeland Security discontinues to be a JOKE...I'll stop making jokes. Its the only way myself and alot of others keep our sanity about the 1/2 a$$ed, BS way that "Homeland Security" is being conducted. No offense is meant by anyone"

As much as I'd like to believe you just forgot to add a sarcasm tag....

Homeland Security might not be such a joke of Daschle and friends would FUND it. Believe it or not, all those FBI arrests lately would fall under the pervue of Homeland Security. There are a lot of things being done that the government makes press releases for, but aren't considered important by the media.

Some people say Tom Ridge isn't doing anything because he doesn't jump out in from of the cameras and make an "official statement" every time there's a problem. He's not real good at public speaking. My apologies to Mr. Ridge...but it's the truth. He just never got comfortable with it. Anyhow, even if he DID make a speech every time we get antsy, he'd be accused of being addicted to the limelight.

These "Homeland Security is a joke" posts that some people consider mandatory anymore are getting a tad tiresome.

They did NOT have to borrow garden hoses. There was nothing wrong with the hoses. The frigin' truck wouldn't start [they have a problem in DC with mechanical sorts of things]. Fortunately the fire was within a block or so of the firehouse and they had to all run to the fire but they did put it out. The little old lady in the burning house was saved [why do I have a mental picture of the flaming elephant in Dumbo? Bad drjoe, Bad!], but alas the house burned to the ground. I don't know if the Dalmatian ran to the scene with the firemen. I'm not making this up.
