Bruce Wilson of Courier Mail says U.S. role in WWII was very small. (Via Drudge)
Drudge Report ^ | July 6 2002 | Bruce Wilson

Posted on 07/06/2002 1:56:22 PM PDT by mrfixit514

In response to emails about an article he wrote bashing Bush, Wilson writes:

They ran on two levels: "Come to Texas . . . and we'll show ya." And, "We saved your asses and if you keep this stuff up we won't do it again."

Some were so offensive I replied in kind. Some I tried to tell that the US came very late into World War II and Britain already had fought its two major battles without them.

What's your point? The US did come late into the war, but there is a darn good chance that the Russians would have been defeated had they not received significant amounts of American aid, not to mention that the US/British invasion of North Africa diverted considerable resources from the Eastern front.

It is true that 9 of 10 Germans were killed by the Red Army, but the Russians killed essentially no Japanese or Italians in combat.

The Russians could not have defeated the Germans without our alliance, but equally we could not have defeated them without either Russian alliance or a far greater number of casualties.

A most interesting thesis - the US was only a minor factor in WWII.

Tell it to the Marines.

How inseeeeensitive of you! ;)

The ignorance of history is not surprising. The author disregards the Lend-Lease Program that provided critical materiel to certain allies. The Soviets were especially helped by Studebaker trucks that aided the mobility of the Red Army during the uncertain periods of 1941 on the eastern front.

Bruce Wilson will probably re-write history to say the Boston Tea Party was just a social for elites, and it got a bit rowdy when someone put rum in the teapot.

What many don't realize is that the true second front in Europe starting from 42 was in the air over Germany. Aside from turning Germany into a pigpen from end to end, the air war absorbed something like half of Germany's production of heavy guns (for AA) which otherwise would have been available for the Eastern front.

The Internet truly is amazing. When else in the history of the world could a stupid hack like this get a world wide audience for his drivel?

The best response is no response. There are idiots all over the world. Why treat this one any differently from any of the others?

Equally we could not have defeated them without either Russian alliance or a far greater number of casualties.

Once we got the A-Bomb in the summer of '45, if we had been fighting Germany alone, we would have started dropping 'em all over the Fatherland and that would have ended the war with Germany as quickly as the war with Japan was ended.

Perhaps Wilson should be forced to take a stroll through the "very small" American WWII cemetaries sprinkled across Europe and in the Pacific rim. Then, maybe, just maybe, he'll begin to understand...I'll volunteer to escort him on my own dime.

Those battles, no doubt, were Dunkirk and Narvik. (El Ala...who?)

Had the Brits not recieved huge amounts of military aid, food, money and actual US troops and Navy, they would have been destroyed in Africa, in Europe and Asia. If they won a few battles, they lost heavily at Dunkirk, Dieppe, Africa, Greece, Cyprus, Singapore, Hong Kong, Burma and in the early battles in Europe. If Montgomery hadn't been such a wimp, we would have won in Europe much sooner. Ungrateful Britidiots!

Don't forget Singapore, where the Brits surrendered without a fight.

Agreed. But we would also have been fighting a Reich that controlled the Middle East and its oil reserves, and Russia at least to the Urals. And till the middle of 1945 nobody knew whether the darn bomb would really work or not.

There is also an excellent chance that after crushing the Russians in 43 or so, the Germans would have come pouring back across the continent and destroyed Britain, which just could not have withstood that scale of attack by itself. Then we wouldn't have had a massive base just off the European shore to launch D-Day from. Any invasion would have had to come direct from North America. The logistics would have probably been impossible.

Also remember that we only had like 4 or 5 bombs put together in 1945. Had the Reich been willing to just hunker down, it would have taken us a really long time to destroy them using the limited nukes we had available. Also, how would we have delivered them without Britain as an ally and with total German air superiority over Europe? Remember they were far ahead on jet and rocket technology. Without constant Anglo-American bombing raids, their aerospace industry would probably have forged ahead even faster.

I agree. The French still believe they defeated Hitler singlehandedly too.

One step further...The U.S. landing on North Africa (November 1942) drew the Afrika Korps away from concentrating solely on the British. Hence, arguably the best soldiers in the Wehrmacht were forced to surrender in mid 1943. They spent the rest of the war as prisoners in various camps in North America, instead of on a battlefield.

Churchill, who knew something about it, was the first to proclaim the enormous debt owed by Britain to the US.

By the same token, we should recognize that the Brits fought on when there was no rational reason for them to believe that they could win, and when the Germans were anxious to make peace on the basis of the British retaining their Empire.

Some modern-day Brits need a boot in the arse, but all of us owe a debt to their fathers and grandfathers.

I'll have to dig around the Internet, but I once saw a line by line item list of supplies and equipment we sent to Soviet Russia, I'll try to post that, or maybe somebody has better access to that. It's truly staggering.
