Hi, Gracey, thank you for your post. Much of this information I never knew before, or like a lot of Americans, never gave it an awful lot of thought, I'm sorry to say. Something happened on September 11th. Things I took for granted all these years, and history that was always boring before, changed in just a few minutes' time.
It's nice to see you here today, Gracey, and I hope you'll come back Monday when the regular thread returns.

Happy Indepencence Day, FRiends!!! Happy Independence Day to you too, Gal.5:1. Thanks for coming by. God bless you and yours!
I received this in an e-mail just this morning. I am posting it here, then I must leave - I know, I said that two hours ago! LOL! But this time I mean it. :-)
Once again, everyone, have a safe and happy holiday! I will be back later.
One
As the soot and dirt and ash rained down,
We became one color.
As we carried each other down the
stairs of the burning building,
We became one class.
As we lit candles of waiting and hope,
We became one generation.
As the firefighters and police officers
fought their way into the inferno,
We became one gender.
As we fell to our knees
in prayer for strength,
We became one faith.
As we whispered or shouted
words of encouragement,
We spoke one language.
As we gave our blood in lines a mile long,
We became one body.
As we mourned together the great loss,
We became one family.
As we cried tears of grief and loss,
We became one soul.
As we retell with pride of
the sacrifice of heroes,
We become one people.
We are:
One color
One class
One generation
One gender
One faith
One language
One body
One family
One soul
One people
We are The Power of One.
We are United.
We are America.

Mama_Bear, I'm enjoying your patriotic enthusiasm so much today! Been a great day for me so far. Lots of neighbors commented on my red, white and blue decos in front of my house. I even hung a "FreeRepublic.com" banner on my mailbox!
Strange thing in my subdivision today. Every year like clockwork, the back yard amateur pyrotechnicians start popping and booming a couple days and nights before the Fourth. Nothing annoying, mostly dads and the kids having fun.
This year, I've not heard a thing yet. Not ONE pop or boom the past days or today, and it's already late afternoon.
I know there'll be some nifty backyard displays tonight (I hope, at least) but the silence today and the past few days has been out of the norm and almost eerie.
Anybody have an idea why this would be so? It's not law enforcement, the sheriff's guys usually wink at little displays here.

I didn't want to cry again today, M. I did, of course.
Readers Digest always has some of the most heartbreaking stories. Bittersweet stories.

This is for all the Lady FReepers.....this is such a sweet Baby Patriot. I have it on my profile page - it is so adorable, I think you'll enjoy seeing it again even if you've seen it on my page.

What a beautiful story. The Honda of America motorcycle and auto plant are in our area. For many years they have held 5 day "Honda Homecoming" for Honda motorcycle owners around the country that draws over 15,000 people. Besides contributing to the surrounding communities (through food, hotels, festivals) several "runs" raise hundreds of thousands for a crippled children foundation. I wonder if this was the inspiration. I'll have to check it out.
Again, thanks and a wonderful Independence Day for you all! GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!
