Yah, you're right. That bitter cold and the looooooooong hours of darkness in the winter would be enough to depress just about anybody. Did the military know about SAD then? If so, what did they do about it? I would think the only thing you could do would be to work indoors under the brightest lights possible. What a bummer. Even in Valdez, the days were super short in the winter. We lived in the shadow of a mountain that was about a mile away, and from Thanksgiving until Valentine's Day, we never saw the sun. We were in the shade all winter long. The kids went to school in the dark and came home in the dark. Very depressing.

These shows have been really great. We have enjoyed watching them.

LOL! When we were very small, my dad took us to Alaska for the first time (1944). I remember playing outside until WAY late, even as a small child (Of course, in Juneau, if it was summer and it wasn't RAINING, you were outside, regardless of your age!).

I was born that same year!

I remember going down the street to the corner store as well. This was the early '70s, I was definitely younger than five since I hadn't started school yet...

I'm lucky to live in a very close neighborhood with no through streets and a gate, but we still make sure there's at least one adult supervising if the kids are playing in the front yards.

You can't be too careful, that's for sure! It's sad that we have to live this way.
