Common problem with ANY first-time home buyer, which is why they have people at banks, credit unions, mortgage companies, finance centers, etc., etc., etc., whose job it is to explain and assist. The Fed needs to now do this for minorities instead because, Mr. Bush??

The level of immigration in the US mushroomed under Billy-Jeff's reign. These immigrants won't be going away and they will become a problem underclass if left unchecked. Bush has made notable efforts to align policies with hispanic voters. Call it socialism or call it wisdom, someone has to pick up the tab to move these new Americans forward. I'm not saying it's right but it won't get any better if it's ignored.

My point was, every person that is against this silly redistribution of tax dollars to provide minorities with homeownership would probably have had a problem with the GI Bill too. I'll make myself more clear in the future.

We've been rewarding people for this for years by welfare, medicaid, ssi, wic, EITC, rent subsidies, etc, etc, etc,. At least there is a little bit of responsibility and risk to the recipients with this one. I don't see this as an ADDITIONAL program in the long run, but a REPLACEMENT one. (If the third partiers don't let a liberal back in the white house.)

Living in the real world (instead of a libertarian utopia) I think these efforts are smart and will be very effective politically. And who exactly is against an increase in minority homeownership?

It is not the government's job to be the lender of last resort nor level economic inequalities in society. That's the end of that - it has been tried many times and led to utter disaster.

If Bush wants to assimilate these people then a policy of "tough love" is necessary. Previous immigrants had to learn English and go to work for themselves. Why should this batch be any different? In truth, it shouldn't.

And yes, in the past, Americans worried about waves of German, Italian and Irish immigrants being a permanent underclass in America. Because they weren't mollycoddled, this is not what happened. Doing otherwise merely slows the assimilation process.
