A day in the life of President Bush (photos); 6/6/02

In what can be called a massive restructuring and combining of government agencies, President Bush addressed the country this evening and outlined his proposal for elevating the Department of Homeland Security to a cabinet position. In this new cabinet position, the following agencies will be consolidated into one mission, homeland security: the Coast Guard, the Border Patrol, the Customs Service, Immigration officials, the Transportation Security Administration, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. In addition to sharing information among all of these different agencies, the Department of Homeland Defense will be charged with four tasks:

1. To control our borders and prevent terrorists and explosives from entering our country.

2. To work with state and local authorities to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies.

3. To bring together our best scientists to develop technologies that detect biological, chemical, and nuclear weapons, and to discover the drugs and treatments to best protect our citizens.

4. To review intelligence and law enforcement information from all agencies of government, and produce a single daily picture of threats against our homeland. Analysts will be responsible for imagining the worst, and planning to counter it.

The President urged Americans to call their representatives and encourage them to support the plan. Enjoy your daily dose of Dubya!

Love this thread! It's a pleasure knowing there are so many nice people on FR. (I also feel sorry for Clinton's new dog.) Fabulous pictures of our president...
(Couldn't get on the computer last night because of terrible thunder and lightning)

Not only is he a Harvard MBA, but he grew up in Midland, TX.

I hadn't put those two together, but you're right. The tough, quick common sense of Texas combined with the high level business education, and administrative know how..........an incredible combination of qualities that make him as qualified to handle this kind of crisis as anyone has ever been.

And you can't forget that his basis for wisdom is the Lord. It puts everything else in perspective so that he can use his gifts as God intended them to be used.

It's not individualized, it's almost like a synchronized program. There are 18 "stations", set up in a circle, and you change "stations" every 35-45 seconds. The stations alternate between resistance machines that are geared for specific parts of the body - leg curls, squat, obliques, bicep-tricep, ab-back, etc., and the jogging pads, which they call "recovery stations". Approximately every 7-8 minutes, there's a 10-second heart rate check. They do work with you the first time you go in order to instruct you on the proper movements for the machines.

It takes about 35 minutes to go three times around the circuit, and it really goes by fast. You definitely don't get bored. Then you do some cool-down stretching, and that's it. There are no showers, no pools,or anything fancy. The one I go to is set up in a small strip mall about a mile from my home.

What I like is that there are very, very few 20-year old hardbodies (love 'em, but they make me feel old and frumpy). Thare are some women who are really heavy, who are also on the Curves diet program. I haven't gotten into that yet (although I should lose 20 pounds), just don't have the motivation yet.

I do feel like I've toned up quite a bit though, the love handles seems to be tightening up, the back of the upper arm (bat wings) are starting to melt away.

I think all Curves for Women offer a free one-time trial run through the circuit, and I would definitely recommend giving it a try to see if you like it.

I could not think of his name when I read your message last night. His name is Vern. Doug is one of the designers. We had a very interesting night. Janice woke me up very early this morning and I did not get back to sleep until nearly 6. Then, our yard man came and cut the grass and that woke me up again. You take care. MamaB

Congratulations on your new grandson. I love his name.

Thank you. My daughter's OB told her that was the third baby boy named "Ethan" that he'd delivered that week.

Don't you just love Curves? I've been going since February, did great March and April, lost 11 inches, backslid in May and as soon as I come back from my cruise next weekend I'm hitting it hard.

I've been going less than a month, so I don't know how many inches I've lost yet, but I definitely feel better toned. Were you on their diet, too?

Don't blame you for waiting to come back until after your cruise - we've been on two of them, and all we did was eat.

While our home price in the Sac area has zoomed upwards I'm sure it's not enough to buy a decent little cottage in the surrounding area. Never know though.

It all depends - if you go inland from the coast, say to Vista or Poway, it's going to be more reasonable. Oceanside is really pretty, too, but it's gotten really pricy.

Thank you - we're pretty excited, can't wait to see and hold him.

mtngrl - congratulations! Cheer up, she'll always be your little girl, even when she has her own kids. She'll turn to you for your wisdom more than ever. It's amazing how smart we all of a sudden become in our children's eyes when they grow up ;-)

kayak, thank you so much. We do feel truly blessed. Daughter and hubby didn't know it on September 11, she was already pregnant. He works at the Pentagon, was in a meeting across the street at the Navy Annex on that terrible day. His office in the Pentagon was destroyed, not by the impact from the plane, but by the fire that spread through the ducting. He finally has moved back in, but said it was a very strange feeling at first.

No I'm not following their diet plan as I am a diabetic and my nutritionist doesn't recommend the elimination of carbs the way most of those plans do it. However, a friend has changed her eating to have very low/no carbs at breakfast and lunch, then has limited carbs at dinner and she incorporated walking 5 days a week, she's lost 70lbs and I've gotten her going to Curves now as well.

***Hmmmmm...guess I didn't phrase that right! When I said, "here in the north," I meant New York State right across from Canada. Hey, we have grapes here too. They come in cute little boxes and we call them raisins.

Oh...LOL! Just a few miles away from Sacramento, right?!

Enjoy your shriveled up grapes.

OMG! I cannot even imagine how blessed they must feel .... and at the same time sorrowful for the tragedy that he witnessed and the friends that he lost.

I hear you, that's why we're moving inland just a bit. It makes all the difference in the world, not having that marine layer to contend with. (p.s. thanks for the nice comments on SD!)
