Parents Were Asleep In Bedroom
SALT LAKE CITY -- A gunman forced his way into a house and abducted a 14-year-old girl Wednesday while her parents slept in their bedroom, police said.
Police said the man also threatened Elizabeth Smart's 9-year-old sister and said he would harm the teen if her sister said anything. The two girls share a bedroom in the home in the affluent Federal Heights neighborhood.
Her sister waited several hours before alerting her parents because of the threat, said Duane Baird, a Salt Lake City police spokesman.
"A two-hour window gives anyone the opportunity to be away from this area," Baird said.
Searchers began looking for clues before dawn Wednesday.
Elizabeth was abducted at about 2 a.m. on June 5, 2002. The abductor is described as a white male, with dark hair and wearing a white jacket and a white baseball cap. Elizabeth was wearing red pajamas, and he let her take a pair of shoes, police said.
The sister told police that the soft-spoken man got into the house by forcing open a window and had a small black handgun.

Bump, my friend. :)

I have four daughters. I am with you.
I also wanted to remind my Freeper brothers and sisters about caution and prevention. Stay armed also.
Best,

Yeah...but there's nothing like a low-pitched growl or a peek by the perp through a window.

Yorkies too! They may be small but they are loud!

I have switched, and quickly did, from the boyfriend scenario to 'wacko from internet chat' as the "kidnapper".
How many times has a girl 'gone missing' to be later found several states away with a wacko she met on the internet? Many.
How does the sister know that he didnt know his way around the house? Did she follow them around as he tried to get out and continually took wrong turns? It just doesnt make sense. And if he had no idea about the houses layout, how did he manage to make it directly to her room and not wander into anyone elses bedroom? The story and descriptions from the younger sister just arent sitting right with me.

I am not looking at it as adult perspective vs. child perspective. I have just read too many stories of girls who get heavy into internet chat and 'go missing' after meeting up with the person they are chatting with, or that person coming to get them.

8 people living in the house is another thing that bothers me about him 'not knowing his way around the house'. With no knowledge of the house, how did he manage to make it directly to her room without wandering into any of the other bedrooms? It demonstrates he had a minimum knowledge of the homes layout. If he has enough knowledge to make it to her room on the first try, then he should have been able to make it out rather easily.
I am not saying it didnt happen exactly as being reported. But the high amount of cases recently of girls going missing at the hands of internet chatters, by choice or not, is a possibility that clealry needs to be examined.

I'm confused... Didn't Utah Girl just post Ari Fleischer's daily briefing just now to FR?

Never mind... I'm spacing it... Our Utah Girl is okay...
I do hope they find her...

You're welcome. And thanks for the compliment.

I have 2 Rotties, the mother and her son..Let me tell you this..anyone even walking on the outside that they don't know, seems they know scents, they're barking..If anyone were to break in here, maybe they'd get in, but I doubt it..and if they did by some freak reason, there's NO WAY they're getting out of here alive.

We're moving into a house this summer (we live in an apartment in NYC now) and will be buying a boxer puppy soon. BTW, I love Rotties...great heads and coloring. They are related to mastiffs, are they not?

A neighbor has described this girl's parents as having been "very protective" of her.....so protective that she was not allowed to attend sleep-overs at a nearby friend's house. Perhaps the parents had a problem with her attending a sleep-over at this particular home, but this bit of information makes me wonder just how restrictive home life was for this girl. At any rate, these do not sound like the sort of parents who would allow their daughter unsupervised access to internet chat rooms. Like you, I find the 9 year old's story a bit suspicious. I would be curious to know how she described her sister's reactions during the alleged abduction.

HOW DO THEY KNOW IT WAS 2 HOURS, AND NOT 20 MINUTES OR ANOTHER ARBITRARY TIME?

Is it just me, or do this girl's eyes look "flat" in both of the pictures we have seen? She just doesn't seem to have the sparkle that I would expect from such a pretty 14 year old. Once again, I have to wonder about her parents reported protectiveness of her, and how happy she was at home. (On the other hand, maybe I'm just searching for clues.........)

Don't know about mastiffs other than they're similar to a rottie, but related? Never heard that before. If referring to size, temperament, I'd say possibly.

bump for more info?

Why do you think a boyfriend would break in and act out a kidnapping with her? I believe if it was a boyfriend, she would have met the guy somewhere away from the house and gone away with him. Just curious.
Also, I believe it was a buddy of one of the workmen or someone that came to see the house as a prospective buyer. There are a lot of sickos in this world and it's a shame a child cannot be safe in her own bed.

Two sisters who were good friends of mine while I was growing were never allowed to sleep over at anyone else's house. Their parents weren't particularly restrictive but just felt it was good common sense for parents to have their children under their own roof at night, to keep them away from potentially unsavory situations where peer pressure might be a factor. They didn't see any reason why their children couldn't have a full social life without staying overnight at other people's houses. I tend to agree.
