Scientists ponder why kangaroos fart less than sheep Australian scientists are trying to work out why kangaroos don't fart as often as sheep and cattle. Queensland Government scientists are investigating microbes in kangaroos' stomachs.
The Department of Primary Industries researchers want to isolate the bacteria in kangaroos that prevents the production of methane.
ABC News Online says they then plan to see if it can be used to reduce gas emissions from cattle and sheep.
If successful, the move could reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from livestock.
Department of Primary Industries Minister Henry Palaszczuk said: "If we can have a breakthrough there, it'll be great news for the environment because at the end of the day it will mean a reduction in the 60 million tonnes of gas emissions that come from our cows and our sheep each year."

"I'll bet we all guessed that as soon as we read the headline."
I expected a story about another stupid professor slopping at the government trough for another "research" grant to supplement the one that was just used up and the bottom line in the pile of useless paper report stated "inconclusive, needs further study".

It would take a scientist to even know this. And, I don't mean that as a compliment.

Since we are on the subject, if you have never heard it The Great Crepitation Contest is very funny. It's the story of Lord Windeschmere, an Englishman, the World Champion Crepitator being challenged by Paul Boomer from the good ole U.S. of A. who has practiced by eating the beans at all the truck stops on his route.
Here is a excerpt from it Crepitation wave

it will mean a reduction in the 60 million tonnes of gas emissions I've never quite understood how fart emissions (or any other gas) could be measured in pounds.
Even a first-grader can tell you that farts float.

I would suspect that diet is the principal reason for the difference. Although they both mostly graze, sheep get the priority for easy grasses, while kangaroos usually have to forage in somewhat tougher surroundings.

Government science has done worse things.
Australian taxpayers should be grateful for the small mercies that bureaucracy grants them.
Thank God there are still issues of substance on FR; I was beginning to wonder....;^)

I keep telling everyone - give me the money to do these surveys! I can come up with the same answers for far less money! (not to mention put the money to good use...[g])

I wonder if vegan farts are cleaner? All those high sulfur content vegan meals make vegan farts smell worse. Every been in a restroom in an Indian restaurant?
To: IGNATIUS
According to a Denver newspaper article(as I recollect)--his independant research had determined that the daily worldwide aggregate of human farts was sufficient to inflate 2.37 Goodyear blimps! More appropriate to express it in units of Hindenburgs.
