The HBO World Trade Center Special

Posted on 05/26/2002 7:01:52 PM PDT by ml/nj

I'm watching.

I didn't know if I would watch. I thought the NY Times article today about the phone calls from those who were trapped was tasteless. I didn't read it.

I'm angry again. Not that I've stopped being angry, but I'm angry again. At this point I have two new (for me) thoughts.

The first is that President Bush (so far missing from the show) blew it big time. We were all united on that day, and he has let the political midgets separate us again; and we've really done nothing to avenge the massacre, and little to prevent the next one.

My second thought is that I've seen and heard a lot of nameless Americans so far. Black, White, Hispanic, Asian - I've seen no Arabs. None. These are mostly random pictures taken during the chaos. I've seen lots of Orthodox Jews. Surely there are more Arabs living in NYC than Orthodox Jews? No Arabs.

He was talking about people leaning out of windows. Not people on the roofs. But I believe those guys might have risked a landing to pull people off if anyone made it to the roof.

Orthodox Jews dress very distinctly, so they are easy to spot.

The Arabs are the ones who look like they shave with a scissors. I didn't see any.

what would your plan of action be?

There seem to be a lot of people around here who could have done a much better job than Bush has done, have you noticed?

The one thing they don't seem to be able to do is PUT THEIR PLANS INTO WORDS, since, when asked, none of them care to share their great wisdom.

I had the same feeling! It's leaders we are desperate for, not politicians. On a day like that, what mattered most, that Rudy is pro life or that Rudy picked us up and carried us.

Kind of like the same thing the Democrats do. Tear Bush down, but never really offer any logical solutions to the problem.

You know what gets me -- you watched that beautiful, moving film tonight and all you got out of it was a rant about Bush. Quite telling.

besides the smoke - the wind at that height makes it nearly impossible to make rooftop rescues with helicopters - that's why they closed it off.

There are a couple of armchair presidents/commanders-in-chiefs around here who "owe" me some plans to save the country/war and, of course, my unconservative, anti-Constitutional white Southern butt. :-)

"the finest journalism you will ever read in your lifetime."

Don't know if I'd go that far, but it was certainly worth the (lengthy) read. I get the feeling, even from this thread, that there is a real hesitancy in New York to delve too deeply into the day, it is still too fresh, and too many people there are still too deeply traumatized to provide a true perspective of that day. The article, in my view, reflected that. It seemed as though as the paper is still exercising restraint, as it has since 9/11, keeping its primary readers in mind.

I'd call that article historical. It will be a good read for schoolkids 100 years from now.

I watched tonight with my daughter, who was away at college on 9/11. It was very well done. She was very upset that they showed the people jumping - she thought it was horrible for the families to have to relive that horror. I tried to explain that we need to see it - in all its gruesome horror. We cannot and should not sanitize 9/11. We must see and hear and be reminded so that we will never, ever forget what was done to this country and our people.

We also had the same thought - that God made sure that Rudy was the mayor of NYC on that day. Just as he made sure the President Bush was our country's leader on that day. And I thank Him every day for GWB.

I fight very hard to keep from hating these people. Every time it enters my head I beg God "don't let me hate them, don't let me hate". I don't want to kill them out of hatred. I want to kill them because they are a mistake, a broken, perverted mistake that needs to be eliminated.

Hate is my friend.
Hate is the final product and understanding that those people who do this are wrong and evil.
Hate brings us to do what must be done.
We have much hate and death to bring to them which we will.
Then I will smile and drink a beer.
Hate some more tomorrow.

Hey! I just wrote a poem!

No one made it to the roofs because the doors were kept locked after the 1993 attack. I still don't understand why. Nevertheless, even if people had managed to get onto the roof, there was nothing the police helicopters could do due to the reasons stated in earlier posts.

I was so glad it was only an hour long. It was brutal.

Me too, I went through an entire box of kleenex.

"I want to kill them because they are a mistake"

Except they (the ones who did it) are already dead!

Sometimes I imagine a conversation I would have with Mohammed Atta....."How could you do this, you stupid, horrible &*$%@%? How could you spend, and end your life this way? How could this be so important to you? How could you think God -- any God, would ever support something like this?"

Some might say we reap what we sow, with Hiroshima in mind. But this is different from the traditional kind of war. I think the evil originated in the mind of one man --Atta -- and that he got funding from a variety of sources. And his great revenge was that no one could exact revenge upon him.

That just shows how confused some people are. The Japanese sowed Pearl Harbor and they reaped Hiroshima.
