Hitler was not a "socialist," he was a fascist. There was a difference. The socialists were against nationalism, Hitler reveled in it. The socialists were against private business, businessmen were lauded in Nazi Germany.
Fascism was a middle point between capitalism and socialism (that's how they described it in the 1930s), it's what Rand is talking about when she says bread and poison can't coexist equally. Just because it was a little more capitalist, that doesn't mean it's any better.

The word NAZI is short for National Socialist German Worker's Party. Fascism was started by Benito Mussolini in Italy. The name of his party was Fascio di Combattimento and thus the word Fascism came into existence. It is interesting to note that Mussolini was a socialist and editor of the Avanti (Forward), the official socialist daily newspaper. Fascism is in effect a racist and militaristic version of socialism.

It may be that socialists are generally against nationalism, but the NAZI's were a national socialist party. I understand that govt schools say he was fascist. However - the primary source information says that they were national socialists, not fascists. What he stood for was socialism. The communists were against business and private property. The Nazi's wanted the business to be succsesful to fund their redistribution and rebuilding of the new pure reich. Socialists allow private property and business so as to produce the most tax reveunue for redistribution.

National Socialism is still socialism. It's about state control. All good socialists will say they are pro business. What does it matter to them. Businesses are the engine that feed their statist machine. Capitalism is not about business, it's about private ownership and freedom to profit from it without state interference. Is that what you think the Germany of the 1930's was like?

Then why did Stalin think the fascists were his enemy? Clearly, there was a difference.
Socialism is not "state control," it's ownership by the people. The state, representing the interests of the people, runs everything. In fascism, the state runs everything because it's the state, and everybody worships the state. There is a difference. I'm not defending fascism or socialism, I'm just pointing out the differences.

Unfortunately, you show a serious misunderstanding of history and political philosophy. The reason Stalin hated Hitler and vice versa is because they were two megalomaniacs with competing visions (not necessarily anathema) for world conquest. As for your explanation of socialism, you couldn't be more wrong. Socialism gives power to people? Where did you get that line?

No, socialism does not give power to the people, but theoretically, it's supposed to. And fascism is not. They are very similar, they're both collectivist ideologies, and I hate them both for that, but they're not exactly the same. Hitler was no more a socialist than he was a Christian--he said he was because it made him look good.

My favorite was one with a picture of Robert E. Lee which said:
"If I'd known this, I'd have died with my men at Appomattix"
Too bad they spelled the name of the place wrong or I'd have put it on my truck...
