Pilots with guns scare ABCs Cokie Roberts because airplanes is one of the few places I feel safe from guns. Having some pilot whos gone off his nut for some reason running around with a gun does not make me feel safe. This Week co-host Sam Donaldson stood with Roberts against guns, even when pressed by George Will about whether he wished the pilots had guns on September 11th.
During the roundtable segment on the May 5 This Week with, for now, Sam Donaldson and Cokie Roberts, Donaldson raised how commercial airline pilots have signed a petition to allow them to carry guns in the cockpit.
The prospect horrified Roberts, who denounced the idea: I dont feel safer. Airplanes is one of the few places I feel safe from guns. Having some pilot whos gone off his nut for some reason running around with a gun does not make me feel safe. George Stephanopoulos, the future solo host of the program, pointed out: Thats always a danger. That person is always in control of the plane and could fly it into the ground if he wants to...
George Will quipped: It is the case, I think, that support for pilots being armed increases as people have more and more experience with so-called airport security.
Will soon asked Donaldson: Do you or do you not wish the pilots on September 11th had been armed? Yes or no Sam. Donaldson: Well I wish that somebody- Will: Thats not a yes or a no. Donaldson: Well, when I asked Secretary Powell for a yes or a no question we heard two or three minutes and I and Im happy to do it. Will: The prosecution rests. Roberts interjected: Suppose the hijackers had pulled the gun out of the pilots hand if the pilot had a gun? Donaldson came to Roberts side: I dont know whether it would have made any difference. If it could have made a difference of course you would want it to happen. But I think, in the long run, guns in the cockpit are not a good idea. I join Cokie.
Can ya'll believe the logic of these people? Jeez!
This could go down in FReeper history as one of the most moronic statements ever!
How do these liberals manage to get dressed and to the office being as stupid as they are?
What do you think those checks from the "United Nations Disarm America" fund are all about?
Guns are bad
Americans do not have a Right to self defense
Americans do not have a Right to carry guns
Americans should not fight back and resist criminals
Profiling is bad
Discrimination is the most evil thing in the world.
Islam is a religion of peace.
Now we are seeing two more things emerge:
1) Liberals will never admit when they are wrong, and
2) Republicans are too stupid or they lack the backbone to capitalize on the situation and repudiate liberalism for once and for all.
The vast majority of american commercial pilots are prior-service military; that is how they got their training. Flying military aircraft, equipped with guns and bombs.
And a large percentage are military reservists - listen to the airlines scream every time the pilots are called up.
So - we can trust them to fly $300 million airplanes, loaded to the hilt with ordinance, or carrying 300+ civilian passengers, but not to carry a pistol?
This is stupid beyond any measure.
Wow, Cokie, good point. If that had happened then those guys could have done anything they wanted, even taken over the planes entirely and flown them into.....oh wait, that happened anyway. And because the passengers were completely unarmed, not because the pilot had a gun which was stolen from him. And Cokie had the nerve to criticize Bush's debating skills and "gravitas"?
But why do you have to bring liberal icons of worship into the discussion? ;-)
'Course some pilot who's gone off his nut being at the controls of the plane doesn't bother her feeling of safety. The solution, of course, is to not allow any pilots on the plane either. Then Cokie can feel perfectly safe. Sam Donaldson can fly it.
And I do not think letting the passengers go on armed is the solution. I meant to say the passengers and crew were completely unarmed.
