They key to the new Free Republic is your pesonal menu. Just click on your name and you will be there. Then explore your personal menu page and links to find all the answers to the New Free Republic web site design.
So go to where your name is on the far right side up corner and click. That is the key to finding your way around this fantastic web site. It is easy. A Welcome is stretched across the world.

When the Breaking News page opens, scroll down on the left side and find where it says "You are not subscribed to this forum,(under the graphic) click here to subscribe
Click on Subscribe
That should work. it.
I'll come back in a freakin week when this is sorted out.
Who did the usability testing on this???
That should take you to the forums.
Look at the top of your screen in the blue area. Click "topics" and that should take you to a screen listing all the topics...breaking news...etcetera.
Click on the title of the topic and after the new screen loads look to the left of your screen. It >should< give you an option to subscribe to whatever particular topic you are in.
It was confusing to me at first because of the light white text on the blue-gray menu running down the left side coupled to my really poor eyes.
After I figured it out I was back to normal within a few seconds! Breaking and Front Page news are back where I had them!
Incredibly user configurable! Best thing since ...I forget who.. wrote a program that put A BANNER ACROSS OUR DESKTOP or broswer LETTING US SEE THE LATEST POSTS OR ARTICLES(!)...(HINT, HINT TO J.R. AND J.R.)
Good Lord that was a LONG time ago!
Just ask or email me if you still have trouble.
Oh, I should point out the server has gone down a couple of times as everyone checks in with comments about the new forum. At least it has for me...
All that said I can still see why the new format will be confusing and possibly a turn-off to newbies or people uncomfortable with computers. And while I'm on broadband I can also see the beautiful flag graphic prisoner6

being a real bandwidth hog and distracting to boot.

In fact, why would I want anything other than "Breaking News" of "Front Page News" to show up like they used to? That is precisely what those categories are for.
Or what if a new "Hot Topic" (currently Anthrax-related) springs up? Will I be made aware of it without having to check "Topics" every hour?
ps. As software puke, I am sympathetic to the resistance to user interface changes...
If it's so easy, why do we need a million threads telling us how to use the new site? I realize it's still a work in progress, but as a GUI usability analyst, I find the new site "user-unfriendly" and wonder how much user testing was performed before being released. It should be so easy to use that we don't need instructions. Just my 2 cents.
They don't remain as such..........the order gets repositioned according to which one has had the latest activity.....that one is in turn placed first within the listings.
I subscribe to two forums, and then I simply link those, along with the rest of the forums I wish to access, via my browser's tool bar...........
Please try the beta site and give us feedback on it as it may become the new site"
There was a running thread with almost that exact title for quite some time prior to today!

I haven't found a practical use for most the features that are now being offered.
I have games on my cellular phone, but I sure as hell don't play them. There is such a thing as getting too cute...
Uh, how come all them states is listed down the right side?
I don't know. Oh, wait. We're in California.
How'd we get here?
I don't know.
You've got the map.
Yes, I know I have the map. I think you missed a turn back there.
I can't drive and look at the map at the same time.
I don't like maps......I'd rather use landmarks. Are you sure we're on the right road? This doesn't look familiar at all.
