The reason for the 17 hour limit is that the east coast is 17 hours from the international dateline. Think of it as 17 meridians, or 17 time zones. If you head east and go to the 18th time zone or meridian, you have to cross the line backwards and lose a day. Therefore the 18th time zone is behind EST.

This I do know! I work in GMT. Actually. GMT never changes with the fall and spring time changes. GMT always stays the same. This is why its only 6 hours ahead in Denver during the summer and 7 during the winter. I fact we joke with the newbies in our control center by telling them to update the GMT/Zulu clocks on the daylight savings time change days.
You said numorous "witnesses" saw it. I didn't say ANYTHING about it NOT crashing. I just followed your logic applying it to Flight 800 where upwards of 100 witnesses saw what they described as a missle hitting it.
What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
Do you believe that the 800 flight was shot down by a missle like the "witnesses" reported....
... or do we have a case where "TomB decides when witnesses are telling the truth."?
