The International Bible Society said Monday that America's best-selling modern Bible is about to get an update using gender-neutral wording, despite past criticism of that idea from conservative Christians.

The revision will be called "Today's New International Version," or TNIV. The original "New International Version," which has sold more than 150 million copies worldwide since 1978, will remain on the market.

I suspect they just avoid pronouns, and use "God" in places where the original had a pronoun refering to Him.

Actually one (and only one) de-gendering change would make the translation more accurate: render anthropos as humans or people--which it actually means. Alas that English lost its distinctive word for male human being. In Old English "man" meant human being, "wapman" meant male human being and "woman" meant female human being.

Note that the -man ending on old words is thus not really gendered at all. Perhaps males in English speaking countries should start a movement to get back or own word, thereby keeping "man" as generic and not marring the language in the interest of political correctness.

All you wapmen and women have a good day!

Two things, it's not breaking news, and the version will never sell in any meaningful quantity. People who study the bible want to study it as it was written. (as much as is possible)

Largely wasting their time anyway. We have some libs too, though it doesn't seem like they are big Bible purchasers. I would suspect most of them would just buy this version, whether its complete or not. Its not like they care, so long as its politically correct.

The N.I.V. is a Gnostic text, not legitimately the Bible. - It is 99% taken from texts altered from original readings by Origen, who rejected the diety, and uniqueness of Christ, so this further corruption is merely a continuation of an ancient attack on the gospel; not even news anymore.

I think it was werman (like werewolf, etc.). Wer was a masculine noun, but maybe it was just a synonym for man.

Since the r of English is practically unique, it would be pretty interesting to listen to immigrants try to distinguish between wereman and woman. We might have to go back to wifman (wif = wife) to tell them apart.

Folks who insist on gender-neutral are typically not big Bible buyers...

I suspect the main market for this book will be public libraries.

Wow! - Like they didn't have that in Corinth circa A.D. 66?

As a fundamentalist believer, I've read with high interest some of the claims made by the KJV-only crowd. If one starts with the premise that the KJV translation was Divinely inspired (I do not), the newer versions' missing and changed verses certainly are serious problems.

Otherwise, unless the newer versions' manuscripts and/or translators were (more) corrupted, there's nothing to say they're not equal to or better than the KJV.

The NKJV that I use has margin notes where the NU and other texts differ. One definite advantage of the KJV is its use of the pronouns "thee," "thou," and "ye," which add to the understanding (to the extent that such pronouns existed in the original text).

This the PC, feminist version that has been discussed for years. It is a complete perversion of the thousands of ancient transcripts. The orginal NIV is bad enough. But, any Bible-believing Christian ought to through their NIV Bibles in the trash and boycott the old and new versions.

I could go on all day showing you scriptures which have been altered, removed, etc.

So? That's only relevant if one believes the KJV translation was Divinely inspired. (See my reply #116.)
