The International Bible Society said Monday that America's best-selling modern Bible is about to get an update using gender-neutral wording, despite past criticism of that idea from conservative Christians.

The revision will be called "Today's New International Version," or TNIV. The original "New International Version," which has sold more than 150 million copies worldwide since 1978, will remain on the market.

I reserve judgment. I'm working on the second time through the NIV. A lot of people take issue with it. At Mass, there are certain gender neutral modifications but not to the basic core issues. Some may be okay. The term "man" was a universal reference to all humanity. There are a lot of people who don't read that word that way any more. The key is not what version you read but that you read the Bible. The ones which twist the core meaning get no support from me... but language has to be somewhat fluid.

The NIV like everything else that is not KLV is taken from corrupted texts. I trust none of them except the King James Version.

I cannot comprehend what you are saying. Could you please talk in 16th Century English so average Americans can better understand you post?

I'm not sure about this title. The International Bible Society (IBS) is a conservative lot.

I think what they've done is take the really glaring examples that can clearly be translated as neutral and are rendering them that way. For example, anthropoi is the plural of anthropos in Greek. Anthropos is Greek for the word, "man." In a sentence such as "pay attention all you MEN," it is clear that the neutral plural is what is intended; i.e., "pay attention all you people."

I would have to have someone show me an example where the conservative IBS rendered God or a pronoun about God into a neutral or a feminine. If they showed me that, I'd be upset because that is so clearly rewriting rather than attempting accurate translation.

I'd also get rid of my NIV Bible as a protest against such a policy by the conservative IBS.

...the new version is aimed at Protestants, and will not appear in an edition with the extra biblical books recognized by Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches.

Plus the pulisher knows they'd be wasting their time even trying!

I actually had to endure a man who would never use a male pronoun to refer to God. God was always called "God".

Instead of He or Himself this man used the terms God or Godself. Talk about goofy. No one ever understood him when he used the "Godself" - except for me because I have always paid close attentiton to the tactics of the gender police. Most people in the room would look at him with the most befuddled looks.

I posted elsewhere. I commented that the Bloomber anchor who read this said, "so... the bible goes politcally correct, i guess...."

Three cheers for him.

Huh? I thought that the plural for 'man' was 'men.' Where is it made clear that the neutral is required?

If you really want to know what translation to "trust" I suggest learning Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, and write your own translation... That way you can be SURE you are getting it right..

Ugh...What insecure people actually feel they need this? I feel included in God's word because I know I am. I don't need some politically correct Bible to tell me so. Anyone who needs this has bigger issues with the Lord than the wording of the Bible.
