Harry Potter, the movie, grossed over $93 million this past weekend. Good! I love it. I love it for two reasons: First, the Potter phenomenon is responsible for sending millions of children worldwide to the books. They actually put down the video games controllers and picked up books! Second, the Potter books and movies are making religious zealots just nuts!
For the lighter side of todays Nuze I offer you this letter to the editor which appeared in the Lynchburg (Va.) Ledger:
Letter to the Editor:
Religion in Politics
Harry Potter and "Wizardry."
The Bible says that we are to stay away from wizardry, witchcraft, sorcery, divination, charmers, etc., that these are an "abomination" (sin) unto the Lord. (Deuteronomy 18:10-12). "Harry Potter" advocates these things, thusly contradicting the Word of God.
I have prayed fervently that the September 11th calamity would lead this country to repentance and a national revival. I will continue to pray that prayer. However, Its disheartening to see a great number of the American people turn to "Satan worship" rather than to God.
The "Harry Potter" craze is Satanism. I have not read the book nor have I seen the movie, and I dont intend to do either. But, I have seen and heard enough to make this determination. Many are saying that its just an innocent movie for entertainment, and that they dont see anything wrong with it. Well, the Bible tells us to trust in the Lord and lean not unto our own understanding. Now, I know this is an insult to the "intellects." But, ones intelligence is "null and void" compared to Gods wisdom. The Bible also tells us to stay away from even the "appearance" of evil, and this appears to be evil. For those who think that this movie is just innocent entertainment remember, Satan is a master deceiver.
This nation is in a fragile situation. We can easily go one way or the other. We need to turn to God. If we dont, then September 11th is just a "drop in the bucket," compared to whats in store for us.
Psychics, Witchcraft, Wizards, etc. are "real" but, they are of the Devil. God is also real and has power over the Devil but, we must turn to Him.
Im a native Washingtonian. The Washington "Bullets" used to be my favorite basketball team. Because of the "gun control" issue, their name was changed to the "Wizards." Im no longer a Washington fan. I have several bullets/guns in my house and I have yet to see one go off and kill someone. Bullets/guns dont kill people, people do. Wizardry is unGodly, and so is Harry Potter.
May America repent and be blessed, amen.

Here is a preacher who has never read a Harry Potter book, and hasnt seen the movie. It doesnt matter, though. Hes heard enough to know that Harry Potter is Satanic. Lets all give thanks that this letter does not in any way represent the feelings or thought patters of mainstream Christianity. This is not the way to bring people to God.
According to the logic, reading a mystery murder novel will make one more likely to murder and therefore should be a sin in itself.
The $93 million figure is a bit sickening though. Whatever. Children will hook onto He-Man, Pokemon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, et cetera. I think the books will become passe by next year--I mean, the next book isn't supposed to be out until 2003.
(Let's not leave out Halloween, Star Wars, the Psychic Friends Network, Kiss ("Knight In Service to Satan"), all agents of THE DARK ONE!)
Easy to say with their record...
Also, no one brings someone to God, they must come to Him on their own.
That is a big problem with much of today's literature and entertainment for children: they are taught through entertainment that it is not only acceptable but laudable to cheat, lie, steal, disobey their parents and teachers, etc. -- and then we wonder why we have a generation of youth that has no respect for authority, the law, or the value of life. The Harry Potter craze is just another symptom, not the disease.
Now, I know this is an insult to the "intellects." But, ones intelligence is "null and void" compared to Gods wisdom.
With sentence structure like this, he best leave the intellectin to others.
Bible Thumpers Be Gone!
I hope my spell works
If the Wicked Queeen was Snow White's heroine and main character, then those bozos might have an argument.
But what about the bigger question, the new smash hit Henry Porter and the Worcestershire Sauce.
Now he is prodding ME to read the books!
Of course they can. A person would have to suffer from sheer stupidity to think they must try a drug before deciding whether to avoid using it and condemn its use to others.
So too can people decide to avoid -- and even condemn -- movies and books based on others' credible reports.
It's not that big of a leap.
Nothing like misstating the position of someone with whom you disagree to refute "their logic".
Most murder mysteries that I have read involve a conflict between good and evil as a theme. Nihilistic entertainment that offers positive rewards for behavior that is wrong, or that nevers shows negative consequences of wrong behavior sends a dangerous message to children. Often it is subtle underlying themes rather than the explicit content that should concern parents. Of course, that takes a little more involvment than most lazy people are willing to provide.
THE PASTOR has objections, based on his own principles and direct citations of the Bible, to this movie. He advises Christians to stay away. You fault him for never having seen it though he object on principle to something which embraces witchcraft, which all admit that Harry Potter does..
YOU, NEVER HAVING MET THE PASTOR AND HAVING NO PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE OF HIM WHATEVER, nevertheless feel free to write "Me thinks the 'Rev.' is upset at the prospect of people having a good time and enjoying themselves", and then you oh-so-wittily add, "Bible Thumpers Be Gone!"
Tell me again why the pastor is an ignoramus, but you're a fount of wisdom?
