ROME -- The helmet of Mychal Judge, the 68-year-old chaplain for the New York Fire Department killed while administering last rites to a dying firefighter on September 11 in New York, was presented to Pope John Paul II following Sunday mass at the Vatican.
Judge was a member of Dignity, the organization that represents the interests of lesbian and gay Catholics, though there was no mention made of this during the mass.
"I offer a warm welcome to the delegation from the New York City Fire Department, so many of whose members lost their lives in the terrorist attack of September 11," John Paul II said in English to the New York delegation made up of family members and fire fighters attending the Mass at St Peter's Basilica.
The delegation approached the pope and knelt before him as one of the firefighters gave John Paul the white helmet emblazoned with a gold cross.
Former President Bill Clinton and New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton were among the more than 3,000 mourners who attended the chaplain's funeral on September 15 in New York. The president called Judge's death a special loss and said, "We should live his life as an example of what has to prevail."
He was a close friend of New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
AIDS philanthropist Edward Maloney told the Advocate he once asked Judge how he survived in New York's conservative archdiocese. "He put his fingers to his lips as if to shush the question."
Said Maloney, "Father Judge was neither out nor closeted. He knew how to walk that fine line and work behind the scenes. He brought bravery, dedication, loyalty -- and a touch of sexuality -- to the two institutions he cherished: the church and the fire department."

"Lesbians, gay and transgender people are no different in all the ways that count from hetrosexual folks."
Hmmm...how 'bout we just agree that God loves and desires the salvation of the souls of lesbians, gay and transgendered people every bit as much as He loves and desires the salvation of the souls of heterosexual folks? Maybe then you'll be less offended by my revulsion over the prospect of the former being instrumental in the formation of my children.

It's amazing that even with the thousands of deaths we experienced recently, the homosexual crowd are still most concerned with their sex perversion.
It's not hard to understand at all. Homosexuality is a mental disorder with serious narcissistic aspects. Their obsession with themselves and their sexuality becomes the only important issue in their lives. To separate them from it is akin to condemning them to death.
In this same vein, it's impossible for a celibate man to be 'gay'. If Rev. Mike honored his vow, he wasn't 'gay'.

I agree with you, why did he tell me? I didn't like it, and told him so, since it didn't matter, but he had no answer. We had a lot of e-mail exchanges, and I think he viewed me as a close friend, perhaps he felt I should know--and if you wonder, it wasn't sexual between the 2 of us, I'm 25 yrs his senior. We were close friends, and altho' we still correspond, and I go for an occasional retreat, I don't feel the same about him. What he told me should have been private to him.

"Being homosexual would embarass and hurt Judge's church, therefore he is either a liar and gay, or another defenseless dead person calumnized in order to further the homosexual agenda."
...a valid general argument, with which, however, I take issue with "Being homosexual", which should be replaced with "Practicing homosexuality".

And in any case, Andrew Sullivan (whom I like a lot, generally) is doing Fr. Mychal a disservice by focusing on something that was probably, to Fr. Mychal himself, not the defining thing in his life. And it's worse that he is doing it knowing that FR. Mychal cannot present his point of view. I like Andrew too; but it seems to me he is exploiting the perception of this man's lifestyle to serve his own purpose. I'm not saying that he's doing it intentionally, but I am saying he's doing it reflexively.

If anything, he was an ex-gay, and that terrifies them to death. You seem to be a considerably more terrified chap than Sullivan. It all comes down to putting things in perspective, and judgment about what is important, and what isn't, and what is worth commenting on in the public square, and what is intrusive.

Mychal Judge was there at the World Trade Center against his better safety administering the last rights to the fallen. He was a brave man doing the Lord's work providing comfort and salvation to the dying in the wake of the atrocity while others (majority straight I am sure) were fleeing the scene. He lost his own life in that service. His bravery should be a lesson to all of us. Thank you!
I feel sorry for those who are so rabid in their hatred of gays they even resent a gay person receiving recognition for an act of bravery or heroism.
Perhaps we should dig into the personal lives of all the police and firemen killed in the WTC to find any skeletons they might have had in their closets in order to smear their memories????? Incredible!

f he lived up to his Vow of Celibacy, his "homosexuality" is kinda a moot point, no? Unless he chose to bed many moral questions and advocated the gay "lifestyle" as respectable.

The man served God. That is all that matters.
To: RobertBauman
I haven't yet seen any confirmation that he was homosexual. He may have worked with the Dignity group, and I read he was a tireless worker for AIDS sufferers, but that does not mean he was an active part of that lifestyle. Homosexual activists knew of his work and just assumed he was, but if no one has proof of it, the comments shouldn't be passed around as truth.

Come ON!!!! Tell us HOW you KNOW that Fr. Judge was a HOMOSEXUAL!!! TELL US!!! If you DON"T, an apology to FR. Judge on this Forum is REQUIRED, if you have ANY decency!! Taking Radical Gay, Andrew Sullivan's rant is NOT PROOF!!! We are ALL waiting on you answer, and if yo are the MAN i think you are, I'm sure it will be very soon in coming!!! xm posted the link to the New York Magazine article about Judge. The article says what was well-known among those who knew Judge -- that he was gay. What other proof do you want?

How do you feel about the black folks who died on 9/11, you bigot? Skin color is a lifestyle choice?
To: RobertBauman
Why did you post this with a barf alert? Why do you care whether a good priest was gay? And are you aware that your screen name is the real name of a gay Republican former congressman?
To: RobertBauman
Although Father Mychal Judge is not known to have strayed from his celebacy, he was always ready to offer words of comfort and inspiration to people facing terrible challenges, including those facing dangers, those suffering as sexual outlaws, those who would otherwise be unheard and uncared for. Kinda like someone else I could name.

Bauman was not just a Republican. Robert Bauman was an anti-gay Republican State Senator from Maryland who was arrested in 1980 for soliciting homosexual sex. He was still alive as of 1998. (Thank you, Google Search.)
True conservatives will forever hate Bauman because he reinforced the untrue stereotype that the biggest phobes are the ones desperate for hot, gay sex. Nothing could be further from the truth. (Except on the rare occasion when its true.)
