Oscar award-winning actor Javier Bardem is facing backlash over comments he made during the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday when he presented the Best International Feature award.
“No to war and Free Palestine,” Bardem said before announcing the winner while wearing a “No a la Guerra” (No to War) pin — a symbol he previously wore to oppose the U.S.’s “illegal war” against Iraq.
Critics quickly slammed the actor for what they described as anti-Israel stances. “It’s no secret that Javier Bardem has spent years vilifying Israel on the world stage,” one user wrote on X.

Heck, I still remember when Elizabeth Warren accepted the Oscar for Marlon Brando.
I would love to be the most successful actor to never win an award. To be a part of great productions, recognized for humble but essential roles, and never feel the need to shout at the clouds.

She spent her entire life in Spain, with most of it being under Franco and his Fascist regime.

Most of the Levant was Roman Palestine before the birth of Christ (Common Era). Here’s a nice piece from Jewish Life from October of 2024:
“Around the time of the Bar Kokhba Revolt (circa 132 CE, although the precise timing remains unclear) — a large-scale armed rebellion initiated by the Jews of Judea, led by Simon bar Kokhba, against the Roman Empire — the Romans changed the name of the province of Judea to Palaestina.
To be more precise, the regions of Judea, Samaria, Galilee, and Idumea now became part of a larger province known as Syria Palaestina.
It is commonly believed that the Romans changed Judea’s name (which literally means “Place of the Jews”) as a way of severing the Jewish connection to the land, and that they chose “Palestine” because it was derived from the Philistines, an ancient enemy of the Jews. While the former is a reasonable hypothesis, there is no evidence for the latter.
The Greek scholar and traveler Herodotus was the first to use the term “Palestine” to describe the land, in the second half of the fifth century BCE:
“The region I am describing skirts our [Mediterranean] sea, stretching from Phoenicia along the coast of Palestine-Syria till it comes to Egypt, where it terminates.”
