Malaysia plans to ban social media for users under the age of 16 from next year.

The government is reviewing enforcement mechanisms similar to what will be introduced in Australia, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil on Sunday (Nov 23).

He cited the need to protect youths from online harms such as sexual grooming, cyberbullying and exposure to sexual content, The New Straits Times reported.

How are they going to enforce this?

Young people are so computer literate now, they’ll find every way around any ‘ban’.

The best part is the a-holes who run Australia gave BlueSky an exemption because of course they did.

This is going to spread.

It is, of course, approaching it from the wrong end.

The parents should be doing this but the government has repeatedly told the parents that they can not control their children's access to such things. Even if your thirteen year old is sexting someone in their twenties.

There is nothing so bad the government can not make it worse.

Was there this September. They are socially conservative and don’t permit what Muslims term “nefarious influences” in their country. So it makes sense to ban it online. They’ll find a way to do it I’m sure. Corruption is EVERYWHERE nowadays. At least two nations are trying to protect their citizens from the rot.

Malaysia is one of my top foreign retirement preferences. I had stem cell work done in KL which is not available in the US (Whartons Jelly). All in for $17K (RT flights, two weeks hotel, food, treatment, $2300 at home kit and gifts). In the US a comparable but inferior treatment is $65K. The dollar goes far there due to lack of corruption. A new domestic Corolla LE knock-off costs $9k out the door. They don’t have all the rules, regulations and cost-added bills or the insurance and legal fee padding like in the West.

What is social media? Are kids not allowed on news sites with comments?

This appears to be unenforceable

What is social media?

An addictive drug. And other countries are figuring that out.

A lot of Freepers seem to think that they are not on social media, because Free Republic ‘doesn’t count’.

You figured it out.

In Malaysia I imagine Christian sites for youth will be considered social media but not Islamic ones.

And just like Australia’s ban all this will do is teach kids to lie about their age, use VPN, and use apps the government doesn’t know about.

The apps like Discord ask for you to provide your photo id with proof of age

Easy enough to get around. You can just google state ID and get a bunch of pictures you can download and edit if you want. And remember there’s tons of social media platforms (wiki list of ones with at least 100 million users is about 3 dozen, and that’s just the “big” ones), they aren’t all going to be complying any age crap, and the government can’t know about them all. And remember, VPN exists, even for you phone. So it’s very easy for somebody to not be “from” one of these countries, at least as far as the internet is concerned.

All these laws are dumb. They are unenforceable, and just show a complete lack of understanding of technology.
