After the 2013 government shutdown ended, Republican leaders made clear they had only been humoring Sen. Ted Cruz and his plot to defund Obamacare.
“It was not a smart play. It had no chance of success,” then-Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said.
Then-House Speaker John Boehner initially said the GOP had “fought the good fight.” But he would later say the plan “never had a chance” and even called the Texas senator “Lucifer in the flesh.”
This is how shutdowns generally go. The side seeking a concession fights what they view as “the good fight,” and then they give up when it becomes clear that it’s also a losing fight. Because, as McConnell has often said, shutdowns don’t work.
And maybe that’s how Democrats thought this one would go down. House Speaker Mike Johnson basically predicted as much Saturday, wagering Democrats might back down after Tuesday’s elections.
But a full month into the shutdown, it’s hard to see how Democrats can give up now. The politics of this have gone surprisingly well for them. And Republicans seem to be the ones struggling for a path forward.
Much can change as some of the biggest impacts of the shutdown start to hit this weekend and in the coming weeks. But we’re in a very different kind of shutdown this time — one where it’s much tougher to see the politics forming an obvious off-ramp......
Democrats would seem to have relatively little reason to back down — and plenty of reason to stick with their demands that Republicans come to the table on extending the enhanced Obamacare subsidies. Imagine a situation in which they have these seeming political advantages and they throw in the towel anyways. It’s not difficult to see that reigniting a backlash on the left.

More like wishful thinking.
THE “HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS” ARE COMPLETELY BROKEN
I AM ABOUT TO SHUTOFF THE TV UNTIL DEC 8 TO AVOID THE NON-STOP SATURATION OF ADS TO”CHANGE YOUR SUPPLEMENTAL PLAN”.
HUMANA IS SPENDING MORE $$$$$ on such THAN ON HELPING PEOPLE GET WELL.
THEY HAVE PISSED ME OFF SO MUCH, I WOULD NEVER USE THEM.
The Democrats want this. They want these people screaming at the top of their lungs for their "free" benefits so they can blame Republicans.
The people who are going to be most hurt by not getting government money are more of the dem base such as SNAP recipients.
—
Who are military families, seniors, the disabled etc. and are not part of the dem base in general.
Food banks have been at capacity since before the shutdown. Now they are stretched thin.
Perhaps in exchange for saying capping SNAP benefits at $2/day/person, paid in daily

Ridiculous - almost no one but the most frugal of curmudgeons can live on $60 a month for food.
Your prices only apply to where you live - everyone else pays a lot more. And you are talking about buying the cheapest and least nutritional bread - the other items are likely also priced on the cheapest of cuts and products - all of which can be unhealthy.
You and others have no business telling other people what they can or cannot specifically eat.
One proposal that I’ve made that might be agreed to. By absolutely no one.
PEOPLE DO NOT SHOP DAILY FOR MEALS
MANY-—LIKE ME—SHOP ONCE A MONTH WITH “FILL IN” ITEMS LIKE MILK.
The whole article is an essay in gaslighting.
“ Article premise is pure delusion.”
Sort of. I can easily see the GOPe caving on Obamacare after the shutdown ends. That would make them look very bad, but they’re not bright, so it might happen.
What a bunch of BS...The polls are showing Trump is winning...
The author, Aaron Blake, is either a liar or ignorant fool. The Dems are losing their ass on the issue and the polls prove this.
Except they are NOT winning. Fake news.
I think Tuesday’s elections will prove who is winning the shutdown. Real results are really the only way to prove it one way or the other.
lol. Your prices are way too low. Milk is 4.50. Cereal is 9.99 for family size. All at Publix which I just was in yesterday.
Publix is expensive. We shop at all the stores for the lowest prices. We love Publix, yet we get groceries at Winn-Dixie, Trader’s Joe, Aldi, Sav A Lot, Walmart and Target. Unfortunately our Winn-Dixie is becoming an Aldi, but another W-D is staying a W-D.
The Pubbies need to stay on message. This is blackmail, debt raising, coverage for illegals and Biden’s boosted coverages during Covid-19 and will raise rates anyway. Affordable Care isn’t. The DEMS constituency will figure it out.
Also they should end by giving out the Capitol Switch Board number (202) 224-3121.
All you need is your zip code to get your Rep’s phone number. Tell the Dems to leave a message. ;-)
Last polls I saw DemoKKKrats were losing big on this.
Unfortunately our Winn Dixie closed. We are supposed to get an Aldi eventually. We’re sorta stuck with Publix.
Maybe but how much does the time machine to send two geriatric patients back to the 90s cost?
