Nearly 42 million Americans lose their food stamp benefits

The lapse in benefits could be temporary if the Trump administration complies with a recent court order requiring them to use emergency money to fund SNAP.

The impact of the food aid lapse will sweep across red and blue states alike: Just over half of all SNAP recipients live in states that backed Trump in last year’s election.

More than two dozen Democratic state officials — including those in California, Massachusetts, Kansas and Kentucky — sued the Trump administration over the lapse in benefits in a separate lawsuit that is still pending a formal decision. Republican officials have pointed the blame at Congressional Democrats, who continue to block the clean funding stopgap which includes money for SNAP.

“Due to a failure by Democrats in the U.S. Senate to pass a clean funding bill … SNAP benefits that many Nebraska families and kids depend on are now unavailable in November,” Republican Gov. Jim Pillen said in a statement displayed on his state’s SNAP administration website. “This shutdown was absolutely preventable. We urge members to approve a clean funding bill and stop using Nebraska’s most vulnerable people for political leverage.”

SNAP provides low-income people with an average of $177 in food benefits each month.

In the interim, several states are dipping into their own coffers to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars — in some cases, millions — to food banks and offer other nutrition assistance. Virginia, Louisiana and New York, among others, have declared states of emergency on SNAP.

But their budgets will only cover a fraction of the federal funds they’ve received for the past 60 years, and states haven’t been given any promise of reimbursement from the Trump administration.

“You have 42 million Americans who will go without food,” said Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), who, like Luján, tried to push through a standalone...

If you go to the original article the very first photo is an obvious illegal alien and her three children at a grocery store.

And according to some reports, 54% of recipients are illegal aliens. Pure insanity.

42 million

Probably breaks down something like this:

20 million illegal aliens
10 million crooks collecting twice, accounting for 20 million
2 million US citizens who need help

The 10th Amendment to the US Constitution.
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

I can’t find free food anywhere in the enumerated powers of the United States.

The number doubled when the Clinton regime decided that it was wrong to check if welfare recipients were actually Americans or even here legally.

I personally find that interesting.

Of the number who aren't illegal invaders, some genuinely can't work. Those are the ones that break my heart. Fortunately, however, (at least, here in OK), community food pantries, churches, and neighbors are stepping up to help. Of the remainder, most don't seem to WANT to work. Easier to sit on one's ass with one's hand out. I saw a clip by one of them a few years back, in which she said "Work is for suckers".

That's right Politico. Spin as hard as you can to make this Trump's fault. Trump should not obey the court order on principle. There is no way that a district court should be tellign the executive branch how to spend money since Congress has not appropriated it. If there ever was a political decision between the executive and Congress, it is this. Second, this is 100% the Dems fault and everyone other than Politico knows it.

Do all EBT accounts get refilled on the first of the month? I hope everyone who has one tries to use it before the Democrats come to their senses and end the shut down. People getting taxpayer-funded money will at least learn that the government is shut down. Many of them possibly did not even know it.
