The threat against our shared reality.
A time existed when you could turn to a library, a newspaper, or a news network and be fairly confident the information you received was factual. Seeing used to be believing. Photos, videos, recordings, and other sources validated information. Those days are gone. Mis- and disinformation run rampant through digital spaces, creating branching narratives that emerge from algorithmic bubbles and infiltrate the real world. And now that the technology to generate spurious video and audio with AI is accessible and quickly improving, the difference between real and fake is becoming harder to discern. Fact and fiction merge. For many, truth has become subjective, a feeling, a vibe. But what happens when we can no longer spot deceit on the internet, when everything must be picked apart and questioned, when there is no shared truth, only a glut of information and gut feelings?
When Lies Become True
The internet is becoming a landfill for junk content generated by AI, often referred to as slop. It has no meaning or purpose other than to get clicks, push falsehoods, or sell something. Google is rife with filler content optimized to rank on the first page just to get clicks and to push ads. AI summaries in browsers distort facts and often blatantly lie. The content seems endless as supply outweighs demand. Soon it could be infinite. What then?
“Recommendation algorithms [will] break down completely,” said Nilay Patel, co-founder of The Verge, speaking on columnist Ezra Klein’s New York Times podcast. “[O]ur ability to discern what is real and what is false [will] break down completely, and I think importantly, the business models of the internet [will] break down completely.”
As the slop-makers fill every crevice of the internet with meaningless content, realistic-looking AI images and videos circulate. Some...

And that’s when it becomes evil.....if it’s not already.
Throughout my life, I’ve been involved in events that were reported and I’ve been interviewed by traditional newspaper reporters.
Even when it was a friendly reporter, I’ve never seen a story in print that accurately or completely explained what was going on.
Reporters and editors tend to be “odd” and they have their own agendas.
only a government run ministry of truth can help us dumbmasses in recognizing what is really TRUTH.

Nothing is true, but human nature.
As per the headline, that is exactly what will happen.
“For false christs and false prophets will arise and will provide great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect. Behold, I have told you in advance. So if they say to you, ‘Behold, He is in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Behold, He is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe them.” Matthew 24:24-26.
Christians, immerse yourselves in the Scriptures so you will not be fooled!
"The dead Internet theory is a conspiracy theory which asserts that since around 2016 the Internet has consisted mainly of bot activity and automatically generated content manipulated by algorithmic curation, as part of a coordinated and intentional effort to control the population and minimize organic human activity. Proponents of the theory believe these social bots were created intentionally to help manipulate algorithms and boost search results in order to manipulate consumers. Some proponents of the theory accuse government agencies of using bots to manipulate public perception." ~ Wikipedia
Because it is Wikipedia that is explaining away the above as a mere conspiracy theory, it is itself, in all likelihood, the product of a bot. Hence, dead.
I thought the ‘Fourth Estate’ had already mastered that. AI will just be redundant.
Truth has been an illusion for a long time. AI just shows it faster.
...yet
In the days before media, when truth was orally conveyed, the reputation of the speaker was very important. Character counted a lot. We will have to go back to that. No more “experts say”, for example. Which ones? Are they endorsing what they supposedly said?
AI just shows it faster.
Media approved
“...Believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see...”
...because there was no way to know any better.
Everyone sees through a lens, no matter how dedicated is the pursuit of truth. We all fall short. It's always been just how things are.
A time existed but it was looooong ago. AI is just going to be the same lazy “journalists” having a high level spelling and grammar checking software to help them make their lies sound more believable.
“You can fool all of the people some of the time, and you can fool some of the people all of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.”
— Abe Lincoln in one of his podcasts
But, really, a good percentage of the population is fooled pretty easily. And AI will make that easier. It may not fool everyone but it will certainly damage the concept of Truth.
The silver lining is that AI will cause mass skepticism - which is a very good thing.
I don’t think the internet has become what it has by design. It is too big for that. It is comforting to think that a single large organization like the Freemasons or the Bilderbergers has taken control but it is way simpler than that. The internet became useless when every search was able to be answered by relevant advertising. Used to be you could ask why is my printer printing gibberish instead of my spreadsheet, and you would find the answer in the first 3 results. Now it is virtually impossible to find the answer in any number of results. I had to stop searching for help except after trying every damn thing I could possibly try on my own. I can only remember on time in the last 7 years that I found a useful answer.
