We Used to Think the Military Would Stand Up to Trump. We Were Wrong.
NYT ^ | 08 13 2025 | Steven Simon and Jonathan Stevenson

Posted on 08/13/2025 7:30:01 PM PDT by yesthatjallen

By ordering 800 National Guard troops to Washington, on the pretext of an illusory crime wave, President Trump has further dragged the U.S. military into domestic law enforcement, in a move credibly perceived as an ominous “test case.” This continues what the administration started in California in June as part of the its deportation efforts.

Unfortunately, though we (and others) had hoped that the military would only respond to calls to action in American cities and states kicking and screaming, we no longer expect resistance from that institution. Once, perhaps, traditionalist officers might have leaned on protocol and refused to heed a lawless order, taking inspiration from the generals — Mark Milley and James Mattis — who resisted the uprooting of established military standards in the first Trump term.

But today, general officers no longer seem to see themselves as guardians of the constitutional order.

It now seems clear to us that the military will not rescue Americans from Mr. Trump’s misuse of the nation’s military capabilities. Recent changes to the terms of the military’s employment by the Pentagon and its members’ incentives to career advancement will ultimately overcome any constitutional and moral qualms about their conduct.

Democratic civilian control and the apolitical professionalism of military officers have long been bulwarks against authoritarianism. This framework proved stable through the 20th century, even when tested by the Vietnam War, in significant part because American presidents and their civilian advisers could be trusted not to imperil the political integrity of the Republic.

Traditionalist as in Benedict Arnold?

Traditionalist as in Benedict Obama. And his treasonous, fat little stooge boy, Mark "Milli Vanilli" Milley.

They are advocating mutiny?

They are telling their Commie simps in the office corps, of which there are quite a few, to get their Commie on.

These people, as is the case with everyone arguing it forget what Washington DC is.

Taxation without representation.

It is NOT a city in a state. It’s the territory of the United States government. It has a mayor, but no governor.

My god this whole stinking thing could be figured out if these people took civics classes.

Maybe they’re trying to lay the ground work that anything Trump does in regards to the military is illegitimate should there be military tribunals in their future.

This all makes sense when you understand that the core constituency of the Democrat party is criminals.

This article sounds like a call to insurrection. Perhaps the authors should be ... detained ... in a DC prison for a couple of years?

The Stte Department “College Royality” hate the Military. I experienced it first hand. There is nothing the Dept of State foreign service personnel hate more than mlitary; they do tolerate the Marine Sercurity Guards, but look down on them. Having served in the foreign service after my military retirement, I hit the lotto for what State hates, White Male, Retired Army, Straight and Christian.

That the State Dept has misused the military since the Obama Administration for PEACE MAKING OEPRATIONS and forced the military to serve in roles dictated by non-military experienced woke college know it alls, without a clue as to anything actually works, the militry has lost thousands of personnel in support of failed ideas approved out of the State Dept.

I am sure this crop of foreign service poersonnel fully believe that since Clinton, Obama and then Biden that the military was broke and under control of the woke. About the only group of people I woulde trust are the special operations operators, and airborne infantry (but even officers in the 82d Abn Div are suspect thses days). The woke takeover of the military and advisors like Miley who seemed to control the Pentagon at times, further gave the impression to the USG Progressives that the Military was captured. After all, the CIA, FBI, STATE, and every other branch of government was either captured or was actual DNC policy Departments within the DNC/USG.

The military will eventually be used to finish off the so called elited by use of martial law and arrest warrants, then the courts martials for pedo’s, traitors, etc. Trump has list of over 60,000 pedo’s and sex abusers that need rounding up and processed.

The Young Turks election night meltdown had the hilarious running comments on the NYT Hillary percentage. One of TYT kept checking the NYT website. It went from 92% surety, down to 80%, 70%.....when it fell to 60%, all of them panicked.

The TYT Meltdown is so popular, it has a page on IMBD!

Soldiers are taught one standard operatoinal phrase that dictates every action in the peacetime garrison environment.

If the Order is Dangerous, Illegal or Immoral in normal pacetime duty situations, it can be questioned. I am not taking about refusing to take a hill, or perform official duties. This is a judgement call which ensures the safety of the both the officer and the NCOs who advise them.

The role of the NCOs when given an order of such nature is to advise the officer of the legality or illegality of taking such actions. Officers must follow the orders of the ir superiors, but good NCOs keep Officers out of trouble by being creative and performing orders legally, safely, and morally.

"...Once, perhaps, traditionalist officers might have leaned on protocol and refused to heed a lawless order, taking inspiration from the generals — Mark Milley and James Mattis — who resisted the uprooting of established military standards in the first Trump term..."

Well. Who knew that going behind your CIC's back to communicate privately with your country's most destructive enemy (Communist China) was an "established military standard".

I certainly did not know that. Gee. Who knew.

All this wimpering, whining, and sniveling is glorious music to my ears...

The NYSlimes has supported Marxist philosophies since the 1930s...
First the Nazis, then the Soviets...
Now they fully support the American Communist Party that was elected to the WH in 1976, 1992, 1996, 2008, 2012, and 2020...
