Budget deficits are something we’ve come to expect from Uncle Sam. After all, without years of overspending, the federal government wouldn’t be sitting on trillions of dollars in debt. But, the latest monthly Treasury statement delivered a rare — and welcome — surprise.
In April 2025, the U.S. government collected $850.2 billion in receipts while spending $591.8 billion, resulting in a monthly budget surplus of $258.4 billion.
That’s not just any surplus — it’s the first monthly surplus of fiscal year 2025 (which began in October 2024), and the second-largest monthly surplus in U.S. history, behind only April 2022’s $308.2 billion surplus.
Does that mean President Trump’s plan is working?

How did Biden generate an even bigger surplus while spending like a drunken sailor? Do we get a surplus every April due to taxes?
Draw down the debt!
“Surprisingly”?
This means nothing.
April is when the tax checks come rolling in.
Trumps fault.
Please don’t tell anyone. Congress will find a way to spend it.
Yes. If you read the article that's the detail for the surplus. There is growth in tariff receipts. But that's not an April specific revenue surge.
It goes on to say that the debt grow if you expand it out to include the fiscal year so far (since October). Thus, in the big picture we'll still running a deficit -- still spending way too much.
Thanks for uncovering the ‘rest of the story’
Trump raised taxes and is spending less. Why would it be a surprise?
We run a surplus every April, like clockwork.
Sure would be nice to see that put towards the debt. That should be the sole priority for any extra money we get.
GOP Senators and Reps are in a panic...
How to screw this accomplishment up will consume all of their efforts over the next few months...
The GOP’s prime directive, “Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory”, needs to be protected and strictly enforced...
The communists are licking their chops as they, once again, do nothing significant to interfere with the GOP’s defeatist philosophy...
They already did. The big beautiful bill spends ups the deficit by way more than that.
saved $260 billion. only $36,740 billion to go.
we're 0.7% of the way there...
Impressive, Mr. President.
Sorry Harris lost man I’m sure she would have been the deficit hawk you speak of
Look Harris lost I know it is difficult for you but hey I guess in 2028 you’ll have AOC or Harris or Mayor Pete or Shapiro or Pitzker to be the deficit hawk you seek
In April people who owe tax money make a payment. It could be one time paymemt or the last of four. But those payments lead to an increased amount of tax receipts over any other month.
Seconded - Put it against the principle of the National Debt!
