Syria’s Jihadi Ruler Thanks Trump for ‘Courageous and Historic’ Sanctions End

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, the head of the jihadist terrorist organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), praised President Donald Trump in an address on Wednesday for taking the “courageous and historic” step of lifting sanctions on his country.

Sharaa delivered a speech to the Syrian people following an in-person meeting with President Trump in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where President Trump concluded the first of three stops in a Middle East tour on Wednesday. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who first met Sharaa shortly after HTS toppled the half-century-old Assad family regime in Damascus, arranged and presided over the meeting.

The event was the first time in 25 years an American president had met a Syrian head of state.

Definitely concerned, but I’m willing to wait and see what happens.

Give the guy a chance. The entire world is seeing respect for America and our leadership. You have to be pretty foolish to double cross America right now I would say. One person in the Middle East said she did not want her children to go to Chinese universities; she wanted them to go to American universities and become like the American people. If they really feel that way over there, give the guy a chance.

This Shariz guy now has an incentive not to fully genocide the minorities in his country - we’ll see how that plays out.

All this guy has to do is prevent Iran or other terrorists from using Syria as a base of operations and prevent massacres of minorities in his country. He’s never going to become George Washington or a capitalist. But if he keeps Syria calm, Trump’s trip will be worth it.

Makes no sense to remove sanctions for Christian-killing jihadis but keep them on Russia.

To my knowledge, the new Syrian government has not attacked Israel or helped arm terrorists, so I’m willing to give them the chance to become a decent country.

President Trump is experienced in dealing with rich, powerful and dangerous men.

From the mafia in the NYC construction and casino business, to the moguls of business and finance, to corrupt politicians at all levels, and the worst dictators in the world. Trump is willing and able to deal with them.

Flipping Syria into the Western camp would be a big geostrategic deal.

If Syria can be brought in from the cold, to join the Free World:

- It puts an end to Iran’s expansionist dream of a Shia crescent to the Med.

- It cuts Russia out of their longstanding port on the Med at Tartus.

- It could greatly improve Israel’s security

- It could allow pipelines to run from the Gulf to the Med and Europe (which Russia long block through its client Assad), bypassing the Suez Canal fees and decreasing transportation costs., removing a pillar of Egypt’s attachment to Russia.

- It could allow for/precipitate a significant return of Syrian refugees from Europe.

My guess is that the Saudis have given him a talk where he and his friends can become filthy rich if they knock off the jihad BS and just get with the program.

Trump promised him a world class resort and golf course.

After all there's no money in jihad and idea of living a life of Saudi stile luxury is a good alternative to an Israeli missal up your wazoo.

One more important outcome, if Syria comes in from the cold and joins the West (at least to the degree that the Gulf Arabs do) - a huge improvement to the lives and future prospects of the Syrian people.

Syria has been a pariah and under sanctions for a long time. A lot of Foreign Direct Investment that naturally occurs in most countries, as Global leaders in business expand, has been restrained in Syria, and could come flooding in, if their assessment of peace, security and rule of law was improved. Nature abhors a vacuum, and Syria could grow rapidly, just re-hydrating to where it should naturally have been, if it had been open to the world. President Trump alone could probably line up a fair sized tidal wave of FDI into Syria, on a half hour conference call with his billionaire buddies.

“My guess is that the Saudis have given him a talk”

I agree with you.

The new Syrian President al Sharaa was born and raised in Saudi Arabia, and was waging jihad for many years on behalf of Saudi-style Wahhabi Sunni Islam, the Saudi State religion. He is from a Saudi tribe, and all the tribes in Saudi Arabi have intermarried their leading families with the Saudi Royal family.

Now he is thrust into a role as a head of State, for which he has had little preparation, requiring a mountain of skills and expertise that he does not have. He needs mentors and allies to help with the awesome responsibility he now bears, for a whole nation. He is naturally going to look to the Saudi Monarchy first and foremost.

The Saudis, for their part, have the opportunity of a lifetime to favorably shape conditions on their Northern border, and the Middle East region, with one of their own running Syria. It is a big deal for all sides.
