The FBI has released the first photos of the AR-15 rifle that Thomas Matthew Crooks used in his attempt to kill former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania last month. The images show that Crooks — a 20-year-old gun nut — broke down the semi-automatic DPMS DR-15 rifle into two pieces and stowed it in a black SwissGear backpack as he made his way through the Butler, Pa. rally crowd. A closer look at the weapon reveals an approximately three-inch chunk missing from the gun’s buttstock, which could be where the police sniper’s bullet struck before the Secret Service sniper finished Crooks off with a headshot. “Thomas Crooks’ rifle broken down as was likely done for transport and the backpack recovered onsite,” The FBI captioned the bombshell new image. A separate photo showed the rifle fully assembled and positioned next to a ruler, which pegs its length at around 36 inches from stock to barrel. The gun’s receiver has been scrawled with some white markings, which the FBI notes it had drawn on the weapon. It was known from previous reporting that the rifle had been purchased by Crooks’ father a decade ago. The agency also released images of two improvised explosive devices in the trunk of Crooks’ car — with the receiver enabling remote detonation set in the “off” position. The bureau said the devices had “several problems with the way they were constructed.” One of the homemade bombs was built inside what looks to be a green ammo can, a wire leading out the back is haphazardly taped to the side of the container and connected to a small device that appears to be equipped with a small antenna. The trunk also contains another backpack, a laptop bag, and a spray bottle filled with a clear liquid.

Thanks. I've seen some of them. Good as far as they go, but not highly resolved for detail. If the FIBbers want some credibility they should release still shots taken by their forensics team. Shots with details, for instance things like bits of trash in the trunk, or in the cab of the car, with their working theories of where any such bit of trash came from and how it pertains to the perp's trail of activity. I doubt such photos will ever be made public, just these antiseptic ones. The perp's trail of activity is the last thing they want to talk about.
ABSOLUTELY Wrong equipment.
I’ve had one for more than a decade and I’ve found that I don’t need to remove it, generally. If I do, it does return to zero.
Okay Mommy :P
It hurts when this happens.
Not for long....
btt
I recall the rifle was said to be a 5.6/.223.
I also recall seeing the lower R side of the shooter’s neck which clearly show an irregular and possibly detritus above his R collarbone, just under the skin. That would match well with a shot into his top, left skull. And would also match the shot coming from high on his left side.
Have you seen an entrance wound on the front of his head/face? I don’t think there is one. The smashed top, left of his skull is the blowback from the round. Reflected pressure wave from inside his skull exiting. That’s why his brains went out the back and no marks on his front. Trajectory was from the top L his skull to the top of his right collarbone. Top Left - Bottom Right, with blowback taking out the back of his bullet-shattered skull.

Did you notice the side mounted (45 deg) iron sights too.
Whatever happened to the real shooter.
Yeah, the dork probably thought it was tacticool since the 3- Gun competitors did it like that.
“The SS can go back to the campaign and say the site is too risky and not recommend it. Did that happen for this event? I rather doubt it”
Isn’t there anyone in the campaign with military or even hunting experience? People who could see for themselves that the site was too risky?
I thought about that, but decided to leave the scope I bought for the project and used halo ring fold down sights. I built my 5.56x45 for hunting. Very low profile on the upper, the only rail is on the upper out to the point where the barrel is screwed down. It has an unstained varnished maple stock and fore grip. 18” 8:1 twist heavy barrel. It fells like a rifle, and with #1953 Speer 70 gr. semi-Spitzer SP bullets it shoots like a hunting rifle.
After I finish tuning it, I might put the scope on it. the front optic is 50mm. But I have not yet determined whether I want to do that.
The Trump campaign has some sort of security expert, because according to reports the campaign has been requesting additional security resources for quite sometime.
