Revealed: First pics of AR-15 that Thomas Crooks used to shoot Donald Trump, as FBI reveals how he concealed it in backpack

The FBI has released the first photos of the AR-15 rifle that Thomas Matthew Crooks used in his attempt to kill former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania last month. The images show that Crooks — a 20-year-old gun nut — broke down the semi-automatic DPMS DR-15 rifle into two pieces and stowed it in a black SwissGear backpack as he made his way through the Butler, Pa. rally crowd. A closer look at the weapon reveals an approximately three-inch chunk missing from the gun’s buttstock, which could be where the police sniper’s bullet struck before the Secret Service sniper finished Crooks off with a headshot. “Thomas Crooks’ rifle broken down as was likely done for transport and the backpack recovered onsite,” The FBI captioned the bombshell new image. A separate photo showed the rifle fully assembled and positioned next to a ruler, which pegs its length at around 36 inches from stock to barrel. The gun’s receiver has been scrawled with some white markings, which the FBI notes it had drawn on the weapon. It was known from previous reporting that the rifle had been purchased by Crooks’ father a decade ago. The agency also released images of two improvised explosive devices in the trunk of Crooks’ car — with the receiver enabling remote detonation set in the “off” position. The bureau said the devices had “several problems with the way they were constructed.” One of the homemade bombs was built inside what looks to be a green ammo can, a wire leading out the back is haphazardly taped to the side of the container and connected to a small device that appears to be equipped with a small antenna. The trunk also contains another backpack, a laptop bag, and a spray bottle filled with a clear liquid.

Neat rifle, great history, problematic to mount optics to.

Re: shorts

Yes, I have seen that photo.

Those shorts and the dead body shorts do not appear to be the same.

However, all the dead body photos I have seen have sections blurred out, so I have not been able to get a full image in mind of what the dead body shorts look like.

I was under the assumption it was a .22LR ... But since it was indeed an AR, why did he miss at 150m? Anybody know what the wind direction/strength was that day.

And also, they say he got off a few rounds... How is that even possible?

DSA actually solved it - good quality upper receiver and a milled top cover with Picatinny rail integrated into it, attached by screw-tightened clamps. Holds zero fine, takes any modern optic.

Look more carefully at the pictures. The chunk missing from the stock is still missing in both. It’s just that when the stock is retracted all the way, the buffer tube is exposed and visually blocks the hole.

Have you seen the local PD’s body cam of the incident? It explained an awful lot.

The buffer tube is a fixed length - when telescoping the stock out, there is a void in the stock, usually covered. There’s a big hole in the stock so you can see the buffer tube when the stock is in all the way.

He was using a red dot holographic sight. On some of those, the dot is large enough that it will obscure the target at longer ranges. Think of it like firing an older gun with iron sights that have a large high visibility front post sight. The sight obscures the target at longer distances.

Fair enough, but kindly make things like that a bit more clear next time. :P

The writer is from New York and doesn’t seem to really know much about his subject. His task is to inflame New York gun haters and let them know that America has is infected with guns

why did he miss at 150m

Trump turned his head at the last micro-second, otherwise the first shot would have hit him in the temple instead of the ear.

Plus how was he able to get on the grounds without passing through a metal detector? How did he have the unbelievable luck to pick the one building that was not guarded?

I’m familiar with them. And you really need to remove it to fully clean the weapon.

The SS wasn’t AWOL, they were on a mission to enable Trump’s assassination. No other explanation is consistent with known facts, e.g. not accepting a drone, deleting texts, not covering that roof, not eliminating the threat after shot #1, etc.

And who in the campaign picked a venue where would be assassins armed with a rifle would have clear shots at Trump from a distance?

Bongino touched on this during one of his recent shows. Outdoor venues are cheaper than renting arenas. The SS can go back to the campaign and say the site is too risky and not recommend it. Did that happen for this event? I rather doubt it

Miss America 1962 was shooting an AR-15 back in 1963.

Demands for gun control in the past was for handguns, always had the promise “Rifles will not be affected!” till 1984 when the anti-gun radicals saw a new target of opportunity, Rifles.

I dunno. Assuming it was 7.62x51. It does some crazy stuff, once destabilized, and would have had lots of energy remaining at 150 yards after popping the shooter’s melon.
