The father of would-be Donald Trump assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks has revealed the family is just trying to “take care of ourselves” — as he stepped out in public for the first time since the shooting.
Matthew Brian Crooks, 53, made the remarks as he was spotted leaving a grocery store on Monday, Fox News reported.
“We just want to try to take care of ourselves right now. Please, just give us our space,” Crooks said as he loaded bag-loads of items into his car.
“We’re going to release a statement when our legal counsel advises us to do so – until then, we have no comment.”
It marks the first time the dad has spoken out since his 20-year-old son opened fire with an AR-15 rifle during Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pa. on July 13.
The would-be assassin was shot dead by a Secret Service counter sniper just moments after he managed to clip the former president in the ear with one of his bullets.
Crooks’ father, a registered Libertarian, had legally purchased the rifle used in his son’s attack.

To clarify, my last post was in appreciation of your sane stance — I do appreciate it. The rest was directed at those blindly blaming the parents with no info to back up their blame.
What a BS headline - Father speaks! and says I cant speak.
Yeah that pics for real. The “dads” head is only the size of three of the heads in the frame, AND he is furthest from the camera lens. LOL
How about waiting until he got home from work to ask about it and they know he goes to the range. Nope, too quick on the knee jerk for the call to LE.
He should apologize to Trump
“Sure, because every parent reports their 20 year old grown son as missing when on any other Saturday they would assume he was at work. But not these parents. Why?”
_____________
The explanation as I understand it is this:
1. Thomas Crooks frequently went to a local range to shoot.
2. He was granted the day off from his job.
3. His father believed he was going to borrow the rifle to do that.
4. When Thomas did not return home within a reasonable time his parents became worried and contacted the local police.
(This is neither a defense or criticism of Crooks’ parents; as we simply don’t know enough corroborated “facts.” I believe the Crooks are following the advice of legal counsel; which is reasonable as they may have criminal and/or civil liability.)
No. He did not speak out. Not worth the time.
.....Both Matthew and Mary Crooks are licensed as professional counselors, according to the Pennsylvania Department of State Licensing System Verification Service......
But these two “counselors” couldn’t keep their own son from becoming an assassin!
Their “kid” was a 20 yo adult, they are not legally responsible for his actions. We have no idea what they knew about their son’s intentions and activities except that they called the police which is a lot more than other parents of mass shooters do. I do not know the gun storage laws of PA or the rules about lending lklong guns. If they knew he was a “loose cannon” and lent him a gun they are morally if not legally culpable.
Meanwhile, the “kid” seemed to do everything possible to announce to law enforcement “here I am and I came to kill people” and the Keystone cops at all levels did not stop him
I agree with that. He should have also sent flowers to funeral of the man who their son murdered.
I remember in the 1980s why James Byrd how the father of the murderer apologized to Byrd’s family and sat with them at his son’s trial.
It defused a potentially volatile situation.
But, barring actions like that, keeping quiet is probably best
Speaks out my arse. Who writes this tripe?-)
but obviously not to share concerns about what might happen or what he knew. Not buying that family knew nothing.
We do know he was seen in BlackRock commercials when he was in HS. And he was in the top 10% of our population in intellectual ability.
I raised 2 psycho-sociopathic, adopted, foster care kids. They both required and received behavioral/psychiatric care. I always told them the reason I take them to their appointments was to protect myself from the justice system after they went out and committed a heinous crime.
It won’t be just a statement. The press will be on him from
that moment for years to come.
“If it was his rifle and he didn’t lock it up, yes charge him. This has happened before and people were charged. I bet parents knew a lot more prior to his son trying to kill Trump.”

The shooter was an adult. His parents have no responsibility for his crimes.
Screw “the public”.
Let these poor people be! Eventually there will be a story and maybe charges, but until then give it a rest,
I think I saw the father works in some mental health administrative position at the U of Pitt.
Heard an odd tidbit at this morning’s hearing. A congress member asked the head of the PA state police whether he had heard about an oddly, antiseptically clean house when the searched it. Something about no silverware, etc.
Your post #40 makes GREAT SENSE.. however, you will consistently be attacked for being RATIONAL and posing solid "common sense" questions.
Sorry to say, FR is still infested with its abundant share of "GOOFY BA$TARDS"
