Conventional wisdom holds that the GOP is split into two factions: A Reaganite wing that still holds on to old ideas of U.S. leadership on the world stage and a populist MAGA wing that is deeply skeptical of U.S. global leadership and wants to retreat into a fortress America.
That conventional wisdom is dead wrong. In fact, the opposite appears to be true: Populist MAGA Republicans are actually more supportive of strong U.S. leadership and engagement in international affairs than establishment Republicans.

Then you have leftist Interventionism, that believes that the United States has the right to impose their will on every other country.
I think there’s a middle ground that Trump achieved. He kept us out of wars, was engaged on the world stage, eliminated ISIS, and took out terrorists. Stopped the Iran deal, didnt give Putin the pipeline. We were respected.
America needs to give up its leader ship role until it drops its gay nonsense
I can only speak for myself but I consider myself a populist MAGA conservative and I think we should be more isolationist. We can't be the world's policeman. We should stay out of Forever Wars. I am not a Neocon. I think the "Establishment Republicans" are Neocons who love war because it means money for the Military Industrial Complex. I despise that.
Well, there are conservatives and the ‘gopE’. Nothing for the rnc/gopE. Local candidates.
There are the Ronald Reagan "Make America Great Again" Republicans, and the
George H.W. Bush "Machine" Republicans.
Most R's would fall under one or the other, but there are outliers (total fakes).
I used to say that somebody has to be the big dog and I’d rather be us.
But that was 20 years ago - the world is a different place now.
“..Populist MAGA Republicans are actually more supportive of strong U.S. leadership and engagement in international affairs than establishment Republicans...”
You re exactly right. MAGA calls for world leadership not by buying international friendship but through cooperative relationships, win-win trade deals, recognizing the culture of others not changing it, etc.
supportive of strong U.S. leadership and engagement in international affairs than establishment Republicans.
The reality it is both and more. Systems are complex.
Liberals look at one data point like CO2 and think they understand and can control the system.
But, complex systems give you a headache and lead to answers like God. And we can’t have that.

Sadly, this is “Post-America” America.
They say that like itโs a bad thing. The trouble with modern America is that we think we should be involved in everything, everywhere.
Wrong. Get involved only when our vital national interests are at stake.
The myth is everything the Washington Post views in its perverted version of reality.
The GOP Establishment is NOT “the Reaganite Wing” of the party, and there is zero overlap. The GOPE hated Reagan, they still hate Reagan and want to get past the Reagan years, and they always do what they can to prevent Reaganites from taking over the party.
What the GOP Establishment actually are, are the progressive republicans with a lineage back to Teddy Roosevelt’s huge massive government schemes. They are the Mitt Romney and John McCains of the party.
The MAGA Wing does have unique characteristics, however most of the Reaganites and the MAGA are the exact same people. Seeking limited government, seeking Constitutionalism, and seeking a GOP that finally fights against Democrats and the media instead of a GOP that fights the Reaganites.
We should let everyone who wants to just walk into our fortress. Terrorists..drug cartel.. communist Chinese..force people to buy EVs..
Pay 2-3 times as much for food.
Keep spending trillions.
Go team!
I agree we have no funds to spare for being the World’s policeman forever. Since China seems determined to be a bad actor in its whole extended neighborhood and beyond? we need to rethink how important those surrounding countries and shipping lanes, trade etc. are to us and the rest of the world and formulate a policy to reflect that in regard to China, etc. Displaying weakness emboldens bad actors so let’s not display weakness and start being consistent with them.
I think our national health boils down to national purpose:
Are we to be governed as a nation for the purpose lining the pockets of billionaire elites, or are we to govern the nation to address the common welfare and security of people in general . . . a government of the people, by the people and for the people . . . . Elites have stolen our government, swindled the people and enriched themselves. . . and lying to us all the way to the bank.
I was and am a Reagan fan and a solid Trump fan. I don’t think MAGA is any where near being isolationists. We need to be engaged in the world. We need partners for trade and support. We just don’t need to get involved in all the problems of the world. We should be the peace makers, not the antagonists.
The main problem is that we have no foreign policy in America, since we have no true position, foreign countries and enemies know that every 4 to 8 years they will be dealing with what in effect is a different country in world relations and purpose than it was under the previous administration, and that this one will be largely reversed or focus completely shifted by the next, and then again by the one following that, and so on.
With no national view, identity or plan, other nations and enemies learn how to milk or exploit whichever party is in office during any given period which means foreign countries make incremental gains over us, no matter which party is in office.
You work the democrats this way during their reign, and then you work the GOP that way during their reign.
With two steps forward and one step back no matter who is in office, you make gradual progress in using us in whichever way your country needs to use us.
America needs to give up its leader ship role until it drops its gay nonsense
How are foreign governments supposed to the US seriously with this crap going on. It’s a clown/freak show.
