Tupperware Brands announced it will be closing its South Carolina factory — the company’s last remaining plant in the US — and laying off more than 100 workers.
The iconic plastic food container company will shift all of its manufacturing operations to Mexico, where many of its products sold in the US and Canada are already made.
The shuttering of the facility in the small town of Hemingway will result in the layoffs of 148 employees, according to the company, which is headquartered in Orlando.
Layoffs are set to begin in September with a closure date scheduled for January 14, 2025, WCBD reported.
“It’s important to note this decision is not a reflection of the performance of the Hemingway team,” Tupperware told the outlet in a statement.”
“We appreciate each of our valued team members and the many years of service they have dedicated to our salesforce and to the Company.”
The Hemingway plant, Tupperware’s sole manufacturing site in the US, was sold in 2023.
Eligible employees will be offered severance packages and early retirement. The company also pledged to help connect them with other companies for employment.

Many Republicans were in on the trade deals that caused this, including Bush and Newt.
And many Freepers agreed, citing lower prices and "benefits to the consumers". Here is a sample from the debates that were going on at FR around that time.
Does Wal Mart Mislead On What It Imports From China?
Post 2, "And the reason that I should lay awake nights worrying about what Wal-Mart imports is???"
Post 5, "Maybe. Why do I care? Is it illegal? Immoral? Unconstitutional? Would I get a better deal otherwise?"
Post 9, "yeah whatever....just go ahead and bash WalMart. This is how the world works and I kind of like the low prices myself...."
Post 30, "but the pseudo communists always come out of the woodwork in a WalMart thread...." (you have to follow the thread to get this one).
Post 56, "Why is this even important? Why should we care what % of their inventory they import whether it be from China or any other country?"
Post 79, "Translation: I won't answer this because my answer would call for protectionism and this would lead to another debacle along the lines of that which occurred when Smoot-Hawley was enacted to "fix" the economy in the 1930's."
Post 94, in reply to post 79 above, "That sums up the mindset of the Wal-Mart bashing brigade here."
China June trade surplus swells five-fold
Post 255, "Why should I pay higher prices for any item, just to satisfy someone else's concept of fair trade."
Post 287, "This applies to the anti-free traders also. USA - we've got ours, screw you. No you can't have access to our markets, we want to keep you poor."
Post 301, "So far I have been accused of being a communist chinese plant to influence Free Republic for taking the free trade position. (So far) Now Free Trade advocates are being lumped with the Islamofacists? I'm building quite the resume!"
NAFTA has been gone for years now, replaced by USMCA.

If I remember correctly, when Trump was President, we had companies come BACK to America from overseas...
With Biden as President, we have companies LEAVING America...
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.........

This company has been in serious trouble for years.
Interesting old threads. Thx.
Hedge fund follies….
Too bad this isn’t after Trump wins in November. Then maybe could give them a call and save these jobs. In 2016, he saved a factory — I think it was in the Steel Belt. IIRC, it was after the election, but before he was inaugurated. (If memory serves me.)
Of course, he’ll get tough re tariffs but then it’ll be too late, probably.
I like your tagline. She was the best. Literally the best.
You have bought into the lies. The economics of operating a plant in the US under Biden are very different that those under Trump. That is the point. The folks behind Biden are destroying America at a rapidly accelerating pace.
Let’s take a poll, how many of the 100 laid off workers voted for Biden ‘cause their stupid.
Redundant, I know.
Tupperware can no longer compete in the market
“The (Tupperware) Party’s Over.”
The PR blackout didn’t help. I have not heard anout them for years, I still have a bit of their product line around the house. If you aren’t actively advertising and not promoting sales, your doomed.
Rubbermaid was a goto until they changed to a stiffer lid formula and quit using rubber. I no longer use it and shifted to “deli container’s” the same stuff that takeout uses. It’s less expensive. Sorbet containers also work well, and last.
1. Direct sales approach outdated. Who wants to attend a high pressure "party" centered on food containers? They changed recently, but missed an entire generation of potential customers.
2. Competition caught up. No longer has first-mover advantage
3. Price.
4. Planned obsolescence - many products in their market share are not intended to last decades.
5. Branding. What compelling reason is there to buy their products in 2024? In 1970, sure but nowadays, what distinguishes them from other brands?
Sad that another iconic American company is failing and moving all manufacturing to non-US facilities. This is about profit generation and expanding margins, not lowering cost. IOW, greed from decades of taking $ out of the organization and not reinvesting in the people, the product, and the business strategy.
The 148 workers in Hemmingway are probably thinking about the current CEO's salary of $1M base with a $312K bonus, and potential $1.25M target bonus.
They could never get away with that scene today.
“If we can’t even have mold injection plants that rely on mostly machines and relatively few workers what can we still do here?????”
Simple things should have to be made in the USA to be sold in the USA.
For the motor vehicle trade, financial balance along the lines of the US/Canadian system of my youth.
“It’s just the reality of cost to produce”
Offshoring to a 3rd world country is, for the reason you give, attractive to manufacturers.
It’s difficult for American human beings because offshoring, like mechanization, tends to make them obsolete.
Or as the democrats call it free trade
We trade our businesses for their illegals Biden approved.
